More Than An Alumna: Taylor Jackson.

I
n the heart of Mobile, Alabama, St. Luke's Episcopal School has long been recognized for its commitment to academic excellence and innovative programs. Among its distinguished offerings, the Biomedical Sciences Program stands out as a beacon for students aspiring to delve into the medical and scientific fields. A shining example of this program's success is Taylor Jackson, a 2023 alumna whose journey from St. Luke's to groundbreaking research epitomizes the program's impact.

Taylor's passion for biomedical sciences was ignited during her time at St. Luke's. The school's Biomedical Sciences program, established in 2010, is renowned for providing a pre-professional college preparatory curriculum that immerses students in various healthcare and biomedical engineering fields. From the outset, students engage in an in-depth study of healthcare systems, medical history, safety protocols, and medical terminology. The program's dynamic curriculum integrates real-world experiences and hands-on learning, facilitated by a cutting-edge skills and simulation lab. This lab features designated hospital, clinic, and triage simulation spaces, allowing students to practice clinical skills such as suturing, venipuncture, and spinal immobilization. The incorporation of advanced technologies like 3D virtual and augmented reality further enriches the learning experience, enabling students to visualize internal anatomical structures and devise innovative solutions to medical challenges.

During her senior year, Taylor participated in the program's capstone course, "Interventions in Biomedical Sciences." This course required her to complete a comprehensive research paper and deliver a presentation, experiences that honed her research abilities and public speaking skills. Additionally, she engaged in job shadowing opportunities, providing her with invaluable insights into various medical professions and helping to solidify her career aspirations.

After graduating from St. Luke's, Taylor pursued higher education as a pre-health major, where she continues to excel. After just her first year of undergraduate study, Taylor was selected to join a competitive summer research project at the University of South Alabama's Whiddon College of Medicine. Her dedication and the solid foundation built during her high school years culminated in her co-authorship of the research paper titled Design of Multiplexed Live-Cell Imaging Experiments Using Excitation Scan. This study focuses on advanced imaging techniques that allow for the simultaneous measurement of multiple signals within live cells, a critical advancement in understanding complex biological systems. The research introduces a multiplexed imaging strategy that enables live-cell target detection via sequential fluorescence imaging, providing a more comprehensive view of cellular dynamics.

Taylor's achievements underscore the effectiveness of St. Luke's Biomedical Sciences Program in preparing students for collegiate and professional success. The program's emphasis on experiential learning, coupled with access to state-of-the-art facilities and mentorship from experienced faculty, equips students with the skills and confidence needed to thrive in competitive scientific environments. Taylor herself credits the program for her preparedness, stating, "The Biomed program, real-world experiences, and hands-on learning truly prepared me for college and life. I have more confidence in my research abilities and public speaking, which is something that I didn’t know I would grasp from the program."

St. Luke's Episcopal School continues to foster an environment that changes the way students experience the world through STEM+M. The Biomedical Sciences Program remains a cornerstone of this vision, inspiring and preparing the next generation of medical professionals and researchers. Taylor's journey from a curious high school student to a published researcher exemplifies the program's success in cultivating talent and ambition.

For prospective students considering a future in the biomedical field, St. Luke's offers a unique and comprehensive program that blends rigorous academics with practical experiences. The school's commitment to innovation and excellence ensures that graduates are well-equipped to navigate the challenges of higher education and contribute meaningfully to the scientific community. Taylor's story is a testament to the transformative power of dedicated educators, a supportive learning environment, and a curriculum designed to inspire and challenge students.

As St. Luke's Episcopal School looks to the future, it remains dedicated to nurturing the intellectual and personal growth of its students. The success of alumni like Taylor serves as both a source of pride and a reminder of the profound impact that a robust educational foundation can have on an individual's trajectory. Through programs like Biomedical Sciences, St. Luke's continues to empower students to pursue their passions and make significant contributions to the world.

About St. Luke's.

T
roop 8743 is our very own Wildcat Girl Scout Troop. Run by Mrs. Miniard and Mrs.Tabatha, this troop has been active for the past three years. The group has grown to be home to over twenty girls, ranging from kindergartners to fourth graders. Our troop also has girl scouts who don't attend St. Luke’s. We have one member who attends Cottage Hill and another who is homeschooled. These girls used to attend St. Luke’s, so once a Wildcat always a Wildcat!

This year, they have two girls working towards thier bronze award. The Girl Scout Bronze Award is the highest honor a Junior Girl Scout can achieve, requiring a team effort to identify and address a community issue through a Take Action project, fostering leadership skills and community impact. These girls have decided to get thier troop together and create blankets for foster families, while also collecting donations for them.

At this most recent meeting, Ms. Brook from Grace's House of Hope came to talk to the girls. This transitional home for single mothers and their dependent children will serve families in the Mobile area. Ms. Brook talked to our aspiring bronze award scouts about Foster care and what Grace’s House of Hope is all about. Grace’s House of Hope welcomes mothers who come into Family Care and are given the tools to rebuild their lives in a safe and healthy space during a transitional time. All of the girls were so interested in what Ms. Brook had to say, they had a multitude of questions. Before Ms. Brook came, the girls all brought their own donations to send back with her to Grace's House of Hope! They collected toilet paper, diapers, paper towels, blankets, laundry detergent, and more! They sent Ms. Brook back with a car stuffed full of donations and gifts. Along with these donations, the troop also sent her some world-famous Girl Scout cookies!!

It was so amazing to see how this meeting unfolded on our lower campus because I used to be a Girl Scout! We had our own troop back when I was on the lower campus and it was such an amazing experience for me. We used to go camping, fishing, and took so many fun field trips. I remember my troop was also filled with a mixed variety of grade levels, including my sister! It really brought me out of my shell and forced me to interact with other kids. I am so thankful Mrs. Miniard and Mrs. Tabitha were able to bring this amazing experience back into our St. Luke’s community! I hope that Girls Scouts serves these young girls like it served me and I cannot wait to see what amazing things they do next.

SLES Grilling Champion, Cammie Moore https://slesmobile.org/sles-grilling-champion-cammie-moore/ Fri, 14 Mar 2025 19:08:36 +0000 https://slesmobile.org/?p=18042 Explore the world of competitive grilling through the eyes of Cammie Moore, a St. Luke's 8th grader and grilling enthusiast.

One Wildcat Lights Up Competitive Grilling.

St. Luke’s has a very talented young student named Cammie Moore who is currently in the 8th grade. Not only is she a dedicated honor student, Student Council Vice President, National Junior Honor Society Vice President, but she is also a grilling champion. In addition to her culinary talents, Cammie enjoys playing soccer, volleyball, and track.

Cammie Moore began her hobby of grilling when she was in the fifth grade at just nine years old. She discovered her love for grilling after taking her first kid’s barbecue cooking class at Loblolly Farm in Semmes. It was during this class that she learned about the different cuts of meat as well as how to properly trim, tie, season and cook them. She found the experience both fun and inspiring, igniting a passion for grilling that has only grown over the years.

Cammie Moore Grill

When asked what she loves most about competitive grilling, Cammie highlights the creative process of developing seasoning combinations for different meats, and testing out what flavors complement each other. She loves sampling her grilled creations and sharing her recipes with her mom. In addition to competing in grilling competitions, she has participated in local cook-offs, further expanding her culinary expertise.

Cammie has achieved remarkable success in her grilling ventures. Recently, she was one of 16 teams competing in The Grilled Cheese Meltdown in October of 2024. She placed 2nd in People’s Choice for her Dragonfly Dust Seasoning Pulled Pork Grilled Cheese and took 3rd place for her Blueberry Vanilla Goat Cheese and Bacon Grilled Cheese. Impressively, she was the only kid competing in the event. At the Gulf Coast Mac Down, Cammie secured 1st place for her Cheeto Mac N Cheese and 2nd place for her Veggie Mac featuring Cauliflower.

When it comes to her personal grilling preferences, Cammie’s favorite food to grill is pork chops. She finds them easy to cook and believes they have the best flavor when prepared with her special seasoning blend. However, she also enjoys grilling a delicious ribeye or New York strip steak.

The same seasoning combination could win 1st place in one competition and land in last place in another.
Cammie Moore

There is a significant difference between grilling for fun and competitive grilling. Casual grilling is relaxed and allows for personal preferences, whereas competitive grilling requires precise execution. Competitions are judged on various factors, including temperature, flavor, appearance, texture, and overall presentation. Additionally, competitions are timed, and cooks must anticipate what the judges will enjoy, not just their own preferences. For example, if a judge dislikes salt and a dish is heavily seasoned, it may result in a lower score—even if another judge would have loved it. Cammie acknowledges that the competition is fierce, but she thrives on both the challenge and the fun.

For those interested in competitive grilling, Cammie offers some valuable advice: “One ‘bad’ score doesn’t mean you’re a ‘bad’ griller. Every competition and every judge is different. The same seasoning combination could win 1st place in one competition and land in last place in another. It all comes down to personal preferences. The key is to keep your head high and keep trying.”

Cammie encourages young grillers to start wherever they are, emphasizing that practice is key. She began as a 9-year-old with no prior experience near a 600-degree grill. With dedication and practice, she quickly became an accomplished competitor. She firmly believes that anyone can improve with effort and determination.

Cammie’s hard work has already paid off in a big way. In her first Ancillary Contest for the Steak Cook-Off Association (SCA), she placed 2nd and won her Golden Ticket to the World Championships. She is proof that dedication and passion can lead to extraordinary achievements.

Cammie’s next big competition will take place on May 3, 2025, at the Mobile’s Best Burger Championship at Loblolly Farm in Semmes, AL. She is currently seeking sponsors, vendors, and competitors—including kids' cooks, food trucks, restaurants, and backyard BBQ enthusiasts. A portion of the sponsorships will support St. Luke’s Tuition Assistance Program, helping more students receive a quality education.

Follow Cammie on her grilling journey on Facebook and Instagram at Griller Girl Cammie and support her as she continues to shine in the culinary world!

Magical Mardi Gras.

E
ach year, St. Luke's Japonica Campus hosts a one-of-a-kind Mardi Gras parade for K2-K5 students, right after the Grandparents Day program. It’s a tradition that brings together students, families, and the entire school community for a colorful and exciting celebration. This year’s parade, following the “School House Rock” themed Grandparents Day, was no exception. The students’ enthusiasm, creativity, and school spirit shone brightly as they marched through the campus, making lasting memories along the way.

A Parade of Fun and Creativity

The Mardi Gras parade is a unique experience where each grade level brings its own flair and creativity to the event.

K2 Students kicked off the festivities dressed in Mardi Gras-themed T-shirts and proudly carried shakers they made in class. These little ones were full of energy, their handmade instruments adding to the parade’s lively vibe.

K3 and K4 Students added a splash of color with homemade Mardi Gras decorations. They wore festive outfits with feathers, beads, and glitter, playing various instruments and waving noise makers to keep the energy high. Their excitement and creativity were infectious, helping set the tone for the rest of the parade.

K5 Students took the parade to the next level by creating their own Mardi Gras floats, each one based on a personal theme, from dinosaurs and football to Barbie and stuffed animals. The creativity behind each shoebox-sized float was impressive! To top it off, the varsity cheerleaders escorted the K5 students and their floats, showcasing both their school spirit and the hard work the students put into their creations.

A Community Celebration

One of the best parts of the Mardi Gras parade is how it brings everyone together. Parents, grandparents, and siblings join in the fun, marching alongside the students or cheering them on from the sidelines. It’s a chance to celebrate not only Mardi Gras but also the sense of community that makes our school so special. The support from families and the collective pride in the students’ efforts make the event even more memorable.

Why You Shouldn’t Miss It Next Year

If you’ve never experienced St. Luke's Mardi Gras parade, you’re missing out! It’s an event full of joy, creativity, and school spirit. Whether you’re participating in the parade or watching from the crowd, there’s something magical about seeing the students’ hard work come to life in such a colorful and lively way. The mix of music, homemade creations, and family participation makes it an event that’s not just for the students, but for the whole school community.

Next year, we invite you to join us for another unforgettable Mardi Gras celebration. Mark your calendars, gather your family, and get ready for an event that’s sure to be bigger, better, and more festive than ever before. It’s a tradition we look forward to every year, and we can’t wait to share the excitement with you!
