Branching Out.

H
ere at St. Luke’s, we focus on getting our students out the door, well, not exactly. An integral piece of our mission statement reads that we develop students “with character and intellect to thrive in college and life”. In fulfilling this portion of our mission, we strive to provide our students with opportunities that will stimulate their growth as individuals, and thus leave them prepared to enter into the next chapter of their lives. Our Biomedical Sciences “Biomed” Program fulfills this mission at an astounding level. Taking place over the course of three-and-a-half years, the Biomed program exposes students to various career paths within the medical field through in-class instruction, guest presentations from experts, hands-on activities, and community outreach. After over three years of experience across many medical specialties, senior students are entered into our capstone course–Interventions in Biomedical Sciences. Interventions students are given a full year to focus their studies on a singular specialty/career path, gaining experience and knowledge through individual study, clinical observations, job shadows, and interviews with local medical personnel.

Even though our first graduating class left our halls in 2013, our Biomed program has produced a long list of notable alumni either achieving great things in the workplace or continuing their education at high levels. Some of these notable graduates include Dr. Murphy Mostellar (class of 2013) who is now a General Surgery Resident at the University of North Carolina and Dr. Mary Page Martin (class of 2014) who received her Doctorate of Pharmacy at Harrison School of Pharmacy. We also have students on their academic pursuit to achieving high level medical positions including Reed Miller (class of 2015) who is an Administrative Resident at Temple University Hospital and currently attends John Hopkins University Bloomberg School of Public Health, Jordan Odom (class of 2017) who currently attends medical school at Kiran Patel College of Osteopathic Medicine, Chase Jordan (class of 2018) who attends medical school at The University of South Alabama, and Lauren Bailey (class of 2019) who is currently a doctoral student of Occupational Therapy at theUniversity of Alabama at Birmingham. In more recent years we have Elizabeth Roebuck (class of 2020) at the University of South Alabama and Kasey Hernandez-Sexton at Barnard College in New York City (Class of 2022) both set on the Pre-Medicine track and both of whom are currently serving the community as Emergency Medicine Technicians.

We as a St. Luke’s community are incredibly proud of each of these incredible alumni and will keep cheering them on in their career pursuits. We will continue to provide the framework for success that our Biomed program has established in these few short years since St. Luke’s high school opened its gates in hopes to encourage even more students to follow their dreams and achieve incredible feats as these alumni have done.

Once a Wildcat, Always a Wildcat!

Trauma Week at St. Luke's.

S
t. Luke's Episcopal School, a private high school in Mobile, AL, will host its annual Trauma Week beginning November 28, 2022. Trauma Week is an annual event sponsored by the Biomedical Sciences department.

This year's event is ripped from the headlines as the campus community stages a traumatic athletic injury, similar to the 2005 injury that ended the career of Alabama wide receiver Tyrone Prothro. The event will begin on St. Luke's football field, where players will stage the play that caused the injury. Current Biomed students along with students from the theatre department worked together to create a moulage, realistic cast and wound makeup.

The Crichton Fire Station Engine 12 EMS and first responders will be on hand to transport the patient to St. Luke's Louise R. Moorer Auditorium. Biomed students will watch as guest speakers walk through the healthcare process from trauma to recovery.

The Biomedical Sciences program at St. Luke's Episcopal School is Mobile, Alabama's only high school program providing curriculum in the biomedical sciences, including biomedical engineering. Since its inception in 2010, this flagship program has only continued to grow. Offering courses such as Innovations in Biomedical Science, Sports Medicine, and the new Culinary Medicine, the program boasts a fully functioning skills and simulation lab, technology innovations lab, and much more. For more information on the Biomedical Sciences program at St. Luke's Episcopal School, please contact program director Diane McCleery at dmccleery@slesmobile.org.

St. Luke's Students Love Mr. Box.

S
tudents receive MORE from their teachers here at St. Luke’s. Mr. Mike Box is one of these incredible teachers whose experience and devotion to their students play an integral role in the lives of many of our wildcats. Mr. Box currently teaches United States History and Government to our juniors and seniors, but the classroom was not Mr. Box’s first calling. The beginning of his career was actually spent in the practice of law. Mr. Box served as the City Attorney for Chickasaw for ten years, the Municipal Judge for Satsuma for five years, and, perhaps most notably, in the Alabama Legislature for sixteen years. While serving as a Legislator, Mr. Box decided he wanted to give back to his beloved community and share the knowledge he had accumulated over the years, so in 2013, Mr. Box joined the St. Luke’s family. Mr. Box continues to make a lasting influence on his students that will carry them far beyond the classroom.

While serving Alabama as a legislator, Mr. Box was selected to serve as president for the National Conference of State Legislators (NCSL). He was the very first, and the only, Alabamian to ever serve in that role! Mr. Box describes this experience as an honor, having been able to work alongside both national and international leaders on solutions to issues that touch our everyday lives. Also while serving as an Alabama Legislator, Mr. Box sponsored many reform bills, but one particularly stands out the most. This would be his position as principal sponsor for the original proposals for the passing of legislation to require the use of seat belts in Alabama, later becoming the cosponsor of the final legislation that was passed. Mr. Box is proud of this achievement, knowing that his contribution spurred change in the Alabama legislature that has saved many lives.

After working in the Alabama Legislature and as a teacher for so many years, Mr. Box has a unique perspective about Alabama Youth today. Mr. Box is adamant that “Our future depends on the youth of today”. He has watched as our world has come to adapt to the new technologies that the twenty-first century has offered. He acknowledges that this adaptation can be taken in both good and bad directions. He encourages responsible use of technology, so that we may reap its benefits while also not sacrificing any integrity. Students are constantly reminded by Mr. Box to closely examine where their sources of information on the internet are coming from.

Mr. Box emphasizes to his students that our government needs people just like themselves to take an interest in politics. As the future of our nation, students are tasked with taking on the responsibilities of government from those who came before them. Mr. Box encourages students to run for public office and work in campaigns after they ultimately leave his class. It is up to the youth today, according to Mr. Box, “to uphold the ideals of our country”. For those students considering a career in politics, Mr. Box offers up two words of advice: “Think, Study!”

The impact of which Mr. Box has made on our campus is truly immeasurable. He brings a fresh and unique perspective into the classroom as a result of his experiences. His contributions are not limited to the classroom, though. Regardless of the time or the location, students will find Mr. Box and his wife cheering on students at all of their extracurricular activities. Our wildcats know that they can rely on Mr. Box to show up for them whenever they need. Thank you, Mr. Box, for your contribution to our St. Luke’s community!

Beyond the Classroom.

B
iomedical Science senior student, Taylor Jackson, has enjoyed amazing job shadowing experiences this summer due to her involvement in St. Luke’s Biomedical Science program.

She first shadowed at a local dermatologist’s office where she stated “I had a blast and really loved the atmosphere.” During the first half of the day Taylor observed office visits and the second-half was surgeries.

“The office visits were casual, many checkups for recent skin cancer patients, some patch testing for allergies (he showed me how to read the patch tests!), and other visits for things like eczema. If a patient presented with a new and concerning spot, he would tell them it was precancer, freeze it off and cut a piece to send to the pathologist or dismiss it as everyday keratosis,” Taylor says.

Taylor stated, “The surgeries I observed were a few cancer removals (mostly basal cells, I believe). Because he uses local anesthesia rather than general anesthesia, these surgeries were nothing too drastic. There were some removals on the legs, neck, back, etc. He numbed the area, cut out the cancer, cauterized it, sewed it up, and called it a day. I was able to get very close to everything and had a great view of him cutting the cancer out. Everything was very casual and he kept a conversation with the patients as he was doing all of this.”

Taylor's next job shadow was with a local OB-GYN. She arrived at the hospital early one morning with the plan of observing two hysterectomies, but quickly learned how fast plans can change in a matter of minutes.

The first stop was a postpartum checkup where they discussed medication that would be prescribed for release from the hospital. Next, Taylor watched her first ever surgery in an operating room, she stated, “I observed a total laparoscopic hysterectomy/bilateral salpingectomy (removal of uterus and fallopian tubes). It was very fascinating to watch the use of the instruments while completely looking at the screen in front of the patient. I got to watch every step of the procedure as I had the perfect spot by the screen. I actually watched 2 of these surgeries and they ranged from 45-minutes to over an hour.”

They next hurried to (Taylor’s personal favorite) a c-section, “The c-section was for a mother with a past history of 3 c-sections. I even observed the cutting of the umbilical cord and closing the incision,” she states.

Last, Taylor observed a suction D&C due to an early miscarriage. She said, “I observed the procedure to suction tissue from inside the uterus. This procedure was extremely bloody, but from what I understand, not too bad to recover from.”

Taylor very much enjoyed both experiences, although very different, noting that the biggest difference was that the hospital environment was a much faster pace. She considers both opportunities a blessing and says, “I’ll never forget this for the rest of my life. I can’t believe I had these experiences at such a young age.”

More Than An Intern.

C
hloe Yates has attended SLES since K5 and is a rising junior. Chloe is a student ambassador and an intern working with the admissions department. She hopes to learn how to be comfortable and confident when touring new families and sharpen her leadership skills. Chloe hopes to play softball in college and to one day be a sports psychologist.

St. Luke’s is happy to provide internships as they are invaluable experiences for high school students. Internships provide very specific experiences for students interested in a certain path. They not only help resumes stand out to admissions committees and future employers, but they also demonstrate that our students are spending time learning and working with others. Furthermore, internships teach important skills that students will need in any field.

According to an annual survey by the National Association of Colleges and Employers, 91 percent of employers said candidate experience is a factor in hiring decisions. Nearly half of surveyed employers wanted experience to come from internships or co-op programs.

An internship is the best way to be immersed in a real-world environment, nothing can replace hands-on experiences. We are blessed to provide Chloe with this experience to help her further develop knowledge that will benefit her in college and life. We can’t wait to see what Chloe’s VERY BRIGHT future has in store! We are so blessed to have her as a part of our school.
