Dylan Driskell Headed to All-State Choir Competition.

Dylan Driskell, a freshman at St. Luke’s Episcopal School, has achieved a remarkable milestone by being accepted into the prestigious All-State Choir Festival. This honor reflects not only his exceptional musical talent but also the dedication and passion he has poured into music throughout his life. Dylan’s achievement is a source of immense pride for the St. Luke’s Wildcat community, showcasing the strength of the school’s music program and the talent it fosters. His story also serves as a reminder of the transformative power of music and its ability to connect and inspire individuals.

The All-State Choral Festival, organized by the Alabama Vocal Association, is a three-day event that brings together the best young vocalists from across the state. Participants are selected through a rigorous audition process, competing against students from all over Alabama. The event provides these talented singers with the opportunity to work with nationally recognized choral clinicians, helping them refine their craft and broaden their musical horizons. The festival culminates in a professionally recorded concert at the BJCC Concert Hall in Birmingham, where the students perform challenging choral literature of the highest quality.

For Dylan, attending the festival represents a chance to push himself musically while collaborating with other exceptional singers. Dylan’s journey in music began early. At just five years old, he attended a gospel camp where he learned to sing in four-part harmony. This formative experience sparked a lifelong love for music and vocal performance. “It was very influential that I learned how to sing and four-part harmony at such a young age,” Dylan shared, reflecting on the significance of that early exposure.

His passion for music only grew stronger over the years, nurtured by his family’s deep musical roots. His father, Mr. Daniel Driskell, who serves as the band director at St. Luke’s, has played a pivotal role in cultivating Dylan’s talent. “We use it all the time,” Mr. Driskell remarked, emphasizing how music and four-part harmony are integral to their family’s daily life.

Dylan’s acceptance into the All-State Choir Festival is a reflection of his talent and hard work, but it also signifies his aspirations for the future. While he enjoys the immediate thrill of participating in such a prestigious event, Dylan has his sights set on long-term goals. He hopes to continue his musical journey by taking a choir class in college and potentially performing with larger musical organizations. “It gives opportunities for choir people to push themselves,” Dylan said, highlighting the unique value of the festival. Mr. Driskell echoed this sentiment, noting that the festival not only gathers the best high school singers from across Alabama but also provides a platform to showcase their dedication and skill.

Dylan’s accomplishment is a source of inspiration for the entire Wildcat community. His peers and teachers are thrilled to celebrate his success, recognizing it as a testament to the dedication and support of St. Luke’s music program. The school’s commitment to nurturing students’ talents and providing them with opportunities to excel shines through in moments like these. Dylan’s story is a reminder of the importance of perseverance, passion, and the willingness to embrace new challenges—qualities that the St. Luke’s Wildcats take great pride in fostering.

As the festival approaches, excitement continues to build within the St. Luke’s community. Dylan’s participation not only showcases his personal dedication but also reflects the collective pride and support of his family, friends, and educators. His journey highlights the importance of music in shaping young minds and creating opportunities for growth and connection. Congratulations to Dylan Driskell on this incredible achievement—we can’t wait to see where his musical journey takes him next! With his talent and determination, the future is undoubtedly bright for this remarkable young Wildcat.

Wildcat Band Parades.

L
St. Luke’s Episcopal School’s Band had the incredible opportunity to showcase their talent and school spirit at the Senior Bowl Street Party Mardi Gras Player Parade on Friday, January 31, 2025. This exciting event, held in downtown Mobile, brought together marching bands, Azalea Trail Maids, college mascots, NFL cheerleaders, and esteemed guests to celebrate in true Mardi Gras fashion. The parade began at 6:00 pm from the Renaissance Hotel on Royal and Conti streets, then proceeded west on Dauphin Street, culminating in a lively end at Cathedral Square.

As thousands of fans lined the streets, eager to catch beads, MoonPies, and a glimpse of their favorite football players, the parade kicked off in grand style. The Order of the Myths, one of Mobile’s historic Mardi Gras organizations, led the parade, setting the stage for an unforgettable evening. Vibrant floats rolled through the streets, and the lively sounds of marching bands, including the Wildcat Band, filled the air. The Mardi Gras atmosphere, combined with the energy of the Senior Bowl festivities, made for a memorable night that captured the heart and spirit of the city. The colorful floats, dancers, and performers created an infectious energy throughout the crowd, uniting people of all ages in celebration.

As one of the many local high school marching bands selected to participate, the seventeen-member Wildcat Band, led by Daniel Driskell, proudly filled the streets with vibrant music and high energy. Some of the songs they played included “Bad Romance” and “Crazy in Love,” causing the crowd to clap, dance, and sing along. The band made a statement in their red tropical shirts, adding to the parade’s colorful and spirited ambiance, their music amplifying the festive atmosphere. Their upbeat and powerful performances helped set the tone for the entire evening, leaving spectators cheering for more.

For these students, this was more than just another parade performance. This was an opportunity to participate in one of Mobile’s most exciting football celebrations. The Senior Bowl, a premier showcase of college football talent, draws scouts, fans, and sports enthusiasts from across the country, making this parade a high-profile experience for all involved. The fact that the Wildcat Band was chosen to be part of this event speaks volumes about their dedication and skill. The students performed not only for their school but for the entire city of Mobile, adding their energy and talent to a celebration that draws thousands every year.

This moment was not just about music; it was about being a part of Mobile’s Mardi Gras tradition and an event that brings the community together in a celebration of both football and culture. These students experienced the thrill of performing for a diverse and enthusiastic audience, gaining valuable experience and creating lasting memories that they will carry with them for years to come. Their participation was a testament to the unity and spirit of the local community, where sports, culture, and tradition blend seamlessly.

St. Luke’s is incredibly proud of the dedication and exceptional performance displayed by the Wildcat Band. Their performance not only highlighted their musical excellence but also demonstrated their commitment to representing the school with pride. Their hard work, enthusiasm, and school spirit were evident in every note they played, and their presence added to the excitement of this beloved Mobile tradition. It was a moment to be celebrated, not just for the band, but for the entire St. Luke’s community.

A heartfelt congratulations to all the students, band directors, and supporters who contributed to making this event a resounding success. The Wildcat Band continues to make their school and community proud with their dedication, talent, and enthusiasm. We can’t wait to see what they accomplish next, knowing that this is only one of many milestones on their journey. With their exceptional work ethic and team spirit, there’s no doubt that the Wildcat Band will continue to shine brightly and inspire future generations of musicians at St. Luke’s.

St. Luke's Wins at MOB.

S
t. Luke’s Episcopal School has achieved a remarkable victory this past holiday season, winning first place at the annual Mobile Regional Airport's Christmas tree competition. This achievement is a testament to the artistic talent of SLES students and the dedication of Mrs. Cummings’ art classes, whose creativity and hard work made this win possible.

The competition at the airport invites schools and organizations to design and decorate a Christmas tree based on a unique theme. The trees are then judged according to a rubric that rewards creativity, participation, and craftsmanship. Additionally, there is an online voting component where the public can support their favorite designs. With around ten organizations/schools competing, securing first place is no easy feat, making SLES’s victory all the more impressive.

This year, SLES’s art students designed a tree celebrating cultures from around the world. Each Art I, 7th, and 8th-grade student selected a country and crafted four ornaments representing it. Pottery students contributed by sculpting famous landmarks from their chosen nations, including the Great Wall of China, the Eiffel Tower, Easter Island statues, and Brazil’s Escadaria Selarón. Additionally, Art I students created miniature passports, while the 7th and 8th graders crafted paper figures representing people from different cultures.

Advanced Art students played a crucial role in bringing the theme to life. They designed a garland featuring letters to Santa from around the world, enlarged international stamps, and a tree skirt styled like a compass rose. The tree topper was a striking feature: a globe-shaped collage with a moving airplane towing a banner that read, “What a Wonderful World.”

Mrs. Cummings, the dedicated art teacher behind this winning project, expressed her pride in the students' work. “I think the students are great this year; they’re extremely creative,” she said, emphasizing the thought and planning involved in each aspect of the tree’s design. She also highlighted the significance of art education, explaining, “It’s a bridge that brings all the separate components together. It unifies every subject in one place, like math, literature, history, and science.”

Several students shared their thoughts on the art program and their experiences in class. Brayden Darby, a pottery student, described glazing as his favorite part of the process, saying, “It allows me to have a peaceful painting time which decompresses my stress.” Chris Washington appreciated the welcoming environment of the art room, where, as he put it, “I can be myself and socialize.” Jeremy Menhennett emphasized the personal value of art, stating, “Art is a way to express your true self.” The success of SLES in the Christmas tree competition highlights the school’s commitment to the arts and the incredible talent of its students.

The effort required to craft each ornament, landmark, and decoration demonstrates a level of skill and dedication that goes beyond a simple holiday project. The students involved in this endeavor learned valuable lessons in creativity, teamwork, and problem-solving—skills that will benefit them far beyond the classroom.

Art programs are vital to a well-rounded education, offering students an outlet for self-expression and critical thinking. At SLES, the art department provides students with opportunities to take on ambitious projects like the Christmas tree competition, encouraging them to push their creative boundaries.

This year’s victory at Mobile Regional Airport is not just a win for the school but a celebration of the power of art to bring people together and inspire joy. SLES’s first-place finish serves as a reminder of the importance of fostering creativity in education. With talented students and dedicated teachers, the school’s art program will undoubtedly continue to thrive, producing incredible works of art for years to come.

Showtime for Center Stage Seniors.

W
orld Theater Day is a day to encourage children to connect to live performances and appreciate the essence, beauty, and importance of theater arts! St. Luke’s offers many theater classes to its Upper School students, including Center Stage for stage actors and Theater Production for theater technology and design enthusiasts. To celebrate World Theater Day, we chatted with Elly Musial and Alex Portella.

Acting can be complex because actors work on their emotions and personalities. Unlike some artists that work with other disciplines to create objects, actors work on themselves to create performances. Theater fans will tell you there is a bit of magic that comes together in theater as with St. Luke’s recent stage production of Mamma Mia. Elly and Alex agree that there are many valuable reasons why students should give Center Stage a try. Acting gives people a voice they would not have otherwise had and it’s a fantastic way to connect with peers and gain confidence with public speaking. While you leave the persona of your character in the dressing room, that exuberant confidence seen on stage finds its way into day-to-day life. Theater is personal and real. It brings people together.

Elly became involved in the arts at a young age, first being exposed to music in KinderMusik as a toddler. As she grew up, she continued to take voice lessons and became a member of the local choir. At the age of 9, she made her debut performance in a production of Annie. Alex became involved in theater in seventh grade in order to join her friends. Her first performance was Cosmic Law during her freshman year.

With years of experience, comes knowledge. Both girls have learned that it’s a MUST to drink water before the curtains rise. Elly says, “It never fails that my throat dries up as soon as I step on stage due to nerves. I’m never as hydrated as I am right before a show.” Alex also takes a few deep breaths to help calm her nerves. (We’ve never thought that either of them appeared nervous in the slightest!)

Now that their final production at St. Luke’s has come to an end, Elly is looking forward to attending Marymount Manhattan College in New York City to further her acting career and will be pursuing a Bachelor of Fine Arts in Acting and minoring in Creative Writing. Alex will be attending Vassar College in Poughkeepsie, NY. She does not plan on doing professional theater but would love to continue doing community shows.

Elly and Alex both really appreciate how hard St. Luke’s Center Stage Director, Ms. Ottolino, has worked growing the theater program. And we, the theater fans, will forever appreciate and remember Elly’s and Alex’s great acting as it brought characters to life and allowed us to connect with the stories on deeper levels. It is through their skillful performances that we were moved, entertained, and inspired. Cut!

Mrs. Cummings Transforms the Arts .

Mrs. Cummings, University Campus art teacher, incorporates her passions for art in her teaching. Her mother influenced her to become an art teacher from a young age. Mrs. Cummings states “I have always enjoyed being visually creative. My mom had to talk my art instructors into letting me take their art classes when I was a kid.”

She has done even more than just art during her teaching career. She has influenced student’s lives through the teachings of young adult literature, theater, civics, and American history. Throughout her life, Mrs. Cummings has established that art is one of the sanctuaries for the youth in school. She believes it is a place to express their feelings in a safe environment. She says “I decided I wanted to be one of those sanctuaries for students by providing a place to be visually creative.” Mrs. Cummings tries to work with as many mediums as she can. Some classes will focus on a particular medium, such as pottery. However, her Art 1, Art 2, and Art 3 classes focus on various mediums and how they can work together to create specific effects.

Mrs. Cummings inspires creativity through student choice and exposure to various artists and their work. She provides an area of choice for students to customize their work to show their voice and understanding of the topic. Also, she includes past and current artists to use as examples when introducing a style of art. Each unit of the curriculum brings different standards and goals to reach the desired art effect.

Student artwork is displayed in the lobby of the theater. Mrs. Cummings says “I look forward to building up our advanced art program for students interested in pursuing art beyond high school. I would like for our art program to collaborate and interact more with the art community within Mobile and the surrounding areas.”

We are blessed to have Mrs. Cummings with her intense drive of bettering students both in and out of the classroom! Thank you, Mrs. Cummings, for all you do!
