Volleyball Senior Night.

V
olleyball Senior Night is one of the most important events for any volleyball team member who is a senior and nears graduation. It is an opportunity to recognize their hard work, dedication, and commitment to the volleyball team throughout their four-year High School career. The feeling during Senior Night is one of excitement and hope, along with a bit of sadness because of the upcoming goodbyes.

The event has a pre-game ceremony in which seniors are honored before their teammates, coaches, family, and friends. This evening activity started with the introduction of senior players, each paired with a touching speech regarding their achievements in sports and school. Coaches and teammates usually tell stories showing the character and the efforts of each senior, bringing both smiles and tears from the audience. They are given gifts, flowers, and other presents that show appreciation for the commitment of the team. This is not a speech to be done out of formality, but it shows a wrap-up of years of experiences shared in winning, losing, struggling, and growing up together.

Family members escorted their seniors onto the court as they were recognized individually. The first senior who was introduced was Shelby Stevens. Shelby was escorted by her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Gordon Stevens. Shelby is an outside hitter and has been a member of the Varsity Volleyball team for the past two years. Megan McDonough was the next senior. She was escorted by her parents Mr. Chris McDonough and Dr. Lisa McDonough. Megan is a middle hitter who has been a member of the Varsity Volleyball team for the past two years. Cami Abel was escorted third by her parents Mr. and Mrs. Kevin Abel. Cami is a volleyball team captain and has been a member of the Varsity Volleyball team for the past three years. Cami also plans to continue her volleyball career at the collegiate level. Last but not least, Hannah Baker was escorted by her parents Mr. and Mrs. Jake Baker. Hannah is a volleyball team captain and she has been a member of the volleyball team for the past four years.

This recognition is a testament to how much their support has meant to the athletes during early morning practices, the craziness of travel plans, and the stress of competition. It is that touching moment that shows the love and support given to players every parent would want and show, and more importantly, the teamwork in every success.

But the match is not as crucial as the feelings of this night. The game is one more opportunity for seniors to show their skills, and to bring years of effort into a bright show of talent and teamwork. It is every serve, spike, and block with more energy and emotion, as if it were to make this moment unforgettable for everyone present. Regardless of the game's outcome, this night was about celebrating achievements and cherishing the journey rather than focusing solely on victory.

More than just a game, this Senior Night bridged the gap between the past and the future. It was and is an opportunity for seniors to reflect on how they have grown from their inexperienced freshman days into experienced athletes who are ready to accept new roles and challenges.

R
unning might seem like a burden for some, but for the Cross Country team, it’s a treasure. Through early mornings and hot afternoons, they push through and run countless miles in order to reach their goals. Led by their coach and one of St. Luke’s beloved history teachers, Coach Russell, the team truly represents what St. Luke’s is all about. His amazing leadership allows the team to understand and reach their full potential. This season they have worked vigorously to reach the point where they are today. Starting in the summer, they began not only preparing for the upcoming season but also creating the bonds that would help this 2024 team become successful. This year the girls team has the honor of being led by sophomore Sophie Dolbear and the boys, junior Rishi Gupta.

Since the beginning, this team has had such great potential. As they are entering an important meet at Jesse Owens this weekend, they are able to go into it with their recent success at Daphne, where the boys impressively placed 8th out of 23 teams, beating huge schools like Spanish Fort and Davidson, along with the girls who secured 12th place out of 18 teams. When hearing from the captains they stated that the collective goal this year is to clinch the division title at the state championship. “We have the tools and coaching in place to do it , and we most definitely have the work ethic.”, Rishi Gupta stated. Next season, they will not be losing any runners, which bodes well for the strength in their team.

I had the opportunity to hear from one of the captains for this season about what he thinks about the season so far and what’s to come. When asked about how it feels to lead the team this year, Rishi stated "Honestly, this is such a great team, and being captain feels a lot like last year—except now I can actually give out punishments! But in all seriousness, it’s been really enjoyable to plan bonding events and to share leadership with Sophie for such an incredible group, both boys and girls.” It sounds like this team has truly made the connections that would help them be successful.

The Cross Country team at St. Luke’s Episcopal School represents a close-knit group of friends who are all about supporting one another through every challenge and triumph. They’ve shared countless practices, pushed each other to improve, and celebrated personal bests together. With each race, they’ve built not just athletic skills but also lifelong memories and friendships. As they gear up for another season, it’s clear that this team is more than just about running; it’s about growth, teamwork, and the bonds that will carry them beyond the finish line. They represent our school well, so let’s all gather and support them throughout their season!

Explore his impact on the community, from cheering on the football team to energizing pep rallies.

Wilkes Wildcat Speaks.

W
ilkes is a well known member of the St. Luke’s community. Everyone knows who he is just by his name. You have met him or even just seen him. Everyone gets excited when they hear his name or see him. Wilkes is our school mascot.

You can find him on the University Campus or the Japonica Campus. You can even find him sometimes at the football games. He helps the cheerleaders with pep rallies. Recently he welcomed all our new students at Wildcat Welcome, which is where all the new student come to hear their teachers talk about their classes and programs. He also does carpool with the football players and cheerleaders. He greets the children and welcomes them in the mornings during car pool. Next on his schedule is to assist the cheerleaders this Friday with the Homecoming Pep Rally.

Wilkes Wildcat, a Celebrity Among Us

I was able to get a one-on-one interview with Wilkes Wildcat. He is always high energy. When asked what his favorite part of pep rallies is he said, “I enjoy the crowd cheering and having fun with me.” He was also asked what he always wanted to be when he was a kitten. “I wanted to be an entertainer, I have always enjoyed being under the lights and performing. It makes me smile when I make others smile.”

Even as a tiny kitten, I wanted to be an entertainer.
Wilkes Wildcat

He is insistent that he does not have a favorite campus, but he does appreciate the volleyball team sharing their litter box with him. On the Japonica Campus, little kids light up and run and hug. The older kids mess with him, which leads to the inevitable dance battle. As a member of St. Luke's Cheer, Wilkes dedicates hours to perfecting his dance moves.

Celebrities, they're just like us

Although he is a very busy wildcat, he makes it his mission to make everyone smile. He says, “If I can make everyone smile in the crowd then I feel accomplished.” Wilkes is also quite the philanthropist, leaving his legacy with an award named in his honor. When you think of Alfred Nobel or Joseph Pulitzer, you naturally think next of Wilkes Wildcat and the award named for him. The annual competition and award is the zenith of St. Luke's Homecoming Week. This week, one senior male will be crowned with the greatest award of his lifetime: Mr. Wildcat.

Being a celebrity is hard

One place you won't see Wilkes is sitting next to you in the classroom. Due to the overwhelming paparazzi, he spends his days doing online school and taking cat naps. If he went to school regularly then he would be swarmed by students and faculty. He can't distract them from their education and schooling. Wilkes is just happy to show up for the fun.

Whether he is dancing, giving high fives, or hugs you will always find him having fun and playing around. He has many photos with students and faculty. Parents love him and so do their kids. He is truly and amazing kitty and has left his mark at St. Luke’s.

HOCO Traditions.

H
omecoming Week is here and there are hundreds of people who work behind the scenes to make it all possible! Specifically, St. Luke’s very own Student Government takes the task of Homecoming day and preparations by horns and dives right in starting in early July. The members of the Student Government began planning this ongoing tradition amid their summer break. They developed an outline for themes, venues, games, and more! This year, the Senior members of the Student Government have made it their mission to create more of an involved student body, including the Wildcats down at the lower campus.

I’m really glad that SGA was able to be more involved this year. I think that all of SGA was very committed to figuring out the themes and we were able to get a lot of student feedback. I hope that the success SGA had with the planning of homecoming week will continue and I look forward to working with the SGA and the rest of the student body this year.
Gavin Leege,SGA President

Another way our Student Government has become embedded into the development of our spectacular homecoming week was through marketing and selling the homecoming T-shirts. The head of the homecoming committee, Diane Swearingen, has been working hand in hand with our Student Government to help market and fund our homecoming dance. They collaborated to develop a theme and design for the dance and T-shirts. Since the T-shirts served as one of the homecoming committees' main sources of funds for the dance, sales needed to be through the roof. For the first time, Homecoming T-shirts were being sold exclusively online, resulting in an obstacle for promoting sales on the Japonica Campus. Realizing the importance of these sales, the Student government took action, volunteering their own lunch breaks to design and create advertising posters for not only the University Campus but also the Japonica Campus. With the assistance of these devoted students, they were able to sell over three hundred T-shirts, within the last week of the polls.

The SGA has been very welcoming with all the new people and makes sure to not leave anyone out with the ideas and the fundraisers. It has been fun getting to know everyone…and what it takes to put all the events together for Homecoming.
Kenlee Hamilton, Freshman SGA Secretary/Treasurer

On the last day of Homecoming week, all of these Students' hard work finally pays off. This Friday will be filled with immense school spirit, laughter, and a school-wide competition. The Student Government has developed an activity-filled schedule for each student on the upper campus. From relay races to the highly anticipated Homecoming Pep Rally, no one will be bored. There will be an option for every student to be active and find joy on this celebratory day. There will be the continuation of our school, teacher versus senior student volleyball game, which is never without a little laughter. But most exciting is the action-packed powderpuff game.

Powderpuff is one of the most exciting events on homecoming day. It brings out the competitive tendencies between the Junior and Senior girls and provides a humorous halftime show performed by the junior and senior boys. Being a part of the group who has worked diligently to develop this Homecoming day, has made me appreciate everyone who works behind the scenes.
William McDonough, Senior SGA Secretary/Treasurer

We are so thankful to every person who has helped and supported the St. Luke’s community throughout the development of our very own unique homecoming experience. There are so many faculty, parents, and staff who go unnoticed for their dedication and sacrifice to make homecoming a truly memorable experience. The Wildcat family is unlike any other and we can never express our gratitude for you all. We hope to see you all dressed up in your wildcat fashion this Friday on our very on field. Go Wildcats!
