More Than Athletes.

Andrew Le

Andrew Le has been a part of the track and field team for 5-years. After doing relays in middle school PE, he realized that he loved running and has been running ever since. Being an athlete has taught him so much about time management and helped make him a better student.

Andrew enjoys being a part of our track and field team because he loves hanging out and bonding with his teammates. This team makes him feel like he is part of the family as they give him their love and support to have the motivation to run. Practice makes perfect, but sometimes practices can be long. To make practice fun, the team always tries to not think about how hard the workout really is or how bad the pain is so they find something to talk about and make jokes and laugh until their stomachs hurt! One of the things that Andrew will miss most is the fun team dinners on the field, sitting in lawn chairs, eating pasta, playing games and listening to music!

Andrew is blessed with a great support system. Coach Russel has been such an important part of Andrew’s journey because he has always pushed him beyond his limits even when he feels like giving up and makes sure he finishes strong. He is thankful for Coach Russell’s constant positive attitude and encouraging him to work harder and to be optimistic. Andrew gets his inspiration from his mom because she always supports him to do his best and pushes him to become a better athlete. Because of his great support system, Andrew will continue his running career at Birmingham Southern College.

We will miss Andrew’s bright light and the way he brings people together. Don’t ever forget “Once a Wildcat, Always a Wildcat.”

Mohammed Shahrouj

Mohammed Shahrouj has been on the track and field team for only 2-years. He decided to become part of the team because he likes running and pushing himself past comfort. Being an athlete has taught him how to focus on his goals and that hard work helps you achieve them.

Mo is thankful that Coach Russell has been a great coach and has allowed the captains to lead and he always pushes them to give 110%. His co-captain, Andrew, has inspired him because he has grown so much as a leader. When Mo needs extra motivation, he recites one of his favorite lines, “It’s about drive. It’s about power. We stay hungry. We devour. We put in the work and we put in the hours.”

After high school, Mo will run for Spring Hill College. Go Badgers!

Mohammed, you have left a lot of footprints at St. Luke’s and will always be a Wildcat!

Jaylon Womack

Jaylon Womack just joined the Track & Field Team this year & they were so excited to have him (and his speed!) He decided to join the team to have the opportunity to become faster, the motivating workouts and the competitiveness (oh…and hot yoga!) Athletics have taught him time management.

To make those early morning 5:00 a.m. hill runs more enjoyable, Jaylon and his teammates make random noises to laugh.

Jaylon really appreciates Coach Russell’s commitment to helping him achieve his goals of beating his own times. Being fast is something he will always need for any sport in the future.

We hope you loved being on the team as much as they loved having you! You will do great things!

Jake Keesee

Jake Keesee has been on the Track and Field team for 5-years as a thrower. He started this sport as a fun pastime between football season and then he grew to love it. He will always fondly remember the fun road trips and attending State. He says the best things about being on the T&F team is that it’s always a fun environment, meets are extremely competitive and your success is determined by your own actions. Jake has really been inspired by his time with Mary Alice because she was a thrower in college and he has learned a lot from her.

Track and Field has opened a door to college and given Jake a great opportunity. Jake plans to continue his career on the Track and Field Team at Mississippi College next year!

Andrew Smith

Andrew Smith has been on the Track and Field Team for 3-years. He decided to join the team because it isn’t as intense as other sports (and Jake convinced him!). Andrew enjoys being on the team because throwers don’t have to run and it’s very laid back compared to other sports. One of his favorite memories was the State meet last year when he got to compete with friends and watch them become some of the best throwers in the State. He enjoys competition days because the people are all still very nice even when they are competing against each other.

Mary Alice has inspired Andrew because she has helped him focus on the fundamentals of his throws. Also, Andrew is proud of his friends that have taken the time to improve their throwing skills in order to throw at the next level. And Andrew’s favorite quote, “Would you mind?” by Gabor Mate.

We wish Andrew the BEST as he continues his education as a Tiger at Auburn University, but he will always be a Wildcat to us!

Maddie Hurt

Maddie hurt has been on the track and field team for 2-years (thrower). She originally joined the team after Coach Meredith encouraged her to. One of her favorite memories was going to state last year and staying in the hotel with Kennedy and Rowan. The throwers make practice fun because the boys are always joking around. Being an athlete has taught her time management skills. One of her favorite motivational quotes/saying is, “You're doing it so you might as well do it right and get better.”

Maddie plans to attend Auburn University next year. We will miss this Wildcat and the many contributions she has made to St. Luke’s!

Allie Champagne

Allie Champagne has been on the Track and Field team for 2-years as a thrower.. She decided to join the team when she wasn’t involved in club volleyball anymore and still wanted to be active. . To make practice fun they laugh with each other when they mess up and help each other fix mistakes. On competition days she enjoys that everyone talks to each other and cheers each other on regardless of what team they are on.

Being on the Track and Field team has taught Allie that it’s never too late to pick something up and how to manage her time. Allie will be continuing her education as an Auburn Tiger next year.

More Than A Striker.

Ella Ferebee #15

Ella is the captain for St. Luke’s and also plays striker. She enjoys being on the soccer team because of the relationships with her teammates, the laughs and the competitiveness. The team makes practice fun by messing around when Coach Broussard isn’t looking. Ella has appreciated that Coach Broussard and Coach Law push the soccer players hard, but they also have fun. One of her favorite traditions of the soccer team is signing the soccer balls for the seniors. Being an athlete has taught Ella life skills such as working together and discipline. One of her favorite quotes is “winning teams don’t make excuses.” Ella plans on going to Auburn University next year.

More Than A Soccer Team.

Ricky Hernandez-Sexton #8

Ricky has played soccer since he was 5-years-old. He currently plays forward for the Wildcats. One of his favorite memories from being on the soccer team was beating Westminster in PK’s - sending them to the Final Four. Being an athlete has made Ricky a better student and worker because he has had to learn how to multitask and manage his time more efficiently. Soccer has taught him how to be a leader, how to communicate and how to be someone that people can look up to. Ricky’s favorite advice from Coach Depinet is when he told them to be passionate about doing something they enjoy. Next year, Ricky plans on continuing his soccer and academic career at Pfeiffer University.

Matthew Knotts #11

Matthew has played soccer for 15-years. Currently, he is the center-midfielder for the varsity soccer team. Soccer has taught Matthew that hard work pays off. His favorite memory of playing as a Wildcat is beating Westminster in the playoffs, the pre-season get-togethers and his teammates. Coach Depinet has been very motivational to Matthew because he always pushes his players to do their best. He plans on attending the University of South Alabama next year.

Kevin Ori

Kevin is the goalkeeper for SLES. He has played soccer for 14-years and one of his favorite memories is winning the second round of playoffs during the 2021 season against Westminster. The crowd, the atmosphere and the joy of winning the game was unlike anything he ever experienced while playing soccer. One of his favorite traditions is the midnight practice on the first day they are eligible to start practicing as a team with a ball. Kevin is thankful that Coach Depinet has been consistently tough on the team because it has greatly improved the talent, both as individuals and as a team. He says Coach Depinet holds them to standards that without, wouldn’t have brought the program this far. Being an athlete has made Kevin a better worker -forcing him to push past mental blocks that he may not have normally tried to push through. One of his favorite quotes is “Today matters.” Kevin is still deciding where he will attend school next year.

Meelan Patel #4

Meelan has played soccer since preschool - he loved the sport from the moment the ball touched his foot. He plays center-back and back-up keeper for SLES. One of his favorite memories was the second round playoff game against Westminster. The support from the fans was incredible throughout the whole game, especially after Ricky made the last PK and everybody stormed the field. He appreciates that Coach Depinet pushes him to be better and knows his potential more than he does (after not realizing this until his junior year.) Being an athlete has taught Meelan that hard work is required on and off of the field. Meelan plans to go to the University of Alabama.

Shubh Patel #9

Shubh has played soccer since he was 12-years-old. He currently plays winger. He has loved being a part of the soccer team because of the dedication it requires and for all the life lessons it has taught him. Some of his favorite memories include scoring his first goal and “Freshman Got Talent.” He appreciates Coach Depinet because he has been his coach since middle school and has always wanted the best for his players. Ricky Hernandez-Sexton has been inspirational to Shubh because of his dedication on and off the field. One of his favorite motivational quotes is “Pain is weakness leaving the body.” He plans to go to the University of South Alabama or Auburn next year.

Thomas Watts #50

Thomas has played soccer for 4-5 years. He is currently left-back for St. Luke’s. He enjoys being on the team because everyone treats each other with respect, he learns something new everyday and the coaches are amazing. He will never forget playing in his first varsity game. One of his favorite traditions is when Alex Ferguson says “Just Do It” at the start of each practice. Thomas admires Coach Beatty because he is funny and also a great coach when it comes to listening to every player. Being an athlete has taught him to stay consistent and to never give up. One of his favorite motivational quotes by Coach Depinet, “Don’t apologize for doing something wrong, saying sorry doesn’t change anything. If you want to fix a mistake, show it on the field.” Thomas plans to attend The University of Southern Mississippi next year.

S
t. Luke's senior, Anna Marie Bentley, will join the Birmingham Southern College women's tennis team for the 2023 season.

As a student, Bentley will major in Health Sciences in BSC's dual nursing program with University of Alabama - Birmingham.

Bentley leaves behind a remarkable legacy of success at St. Luke's. As a Wildcat, Bentley was a three-time AHSAA State Champion in doubles, an AHSAA State Champion in singles, and teammate on the state championship girls' tennis team.

In addition to tennis, Bentley is also a member of the Cross Country team, Student Ambassador, Intern, and a member of Key Club, and Ronald McDonald House Red Shoe Krewe.

Read on for our interview with Anna Marie Bentley.

St. Luke's: What college will you be going to?
Anna Marie Bentley: I'll be attending Birmingham Southern College

SL:   How and why did you decide to go there?
AMB:   I got in contact with the tennis coach last year, and she invited me on campus to tour and meet the team. For me, I felt very welcomed by all the girls and was invited back up for an overnight visit with the girls team. I went back and absolutely loved it! The girls on the team were all so welcoming and encouraging, and I knew that I wanted to be a part of the team next fall.

SL:   How did SL help prepare you to participate at the next level?
AMB:   St. Luke's allowed me the opportunity to compete on the Varsity Tennis Team for 6 years.

SL:   Do you have any hobbies or interests outside of sports?
AMB:   I also ran on the Varsity Cross Country team for 5 years.

SL:   Which strengths do you believe you have that make you a great athlete?
AMB:   I am very big on teamwork. As being team captain this year for both of my sporting teams, I have learned that a positive and encouraging atmosphere is extremely important in the success of a team.

SL:   What have you learned about teamwork from your past experiences on your teams at SL?
AMB:   I have learned that teamwork is one of the keys to success. For instance, I was a part of the 2021 State Championship Tennis Team. The state title could not have been possible if we did not work together as a team. We all met on weekends and put in extra work outside of tennis practices. As a team, we had to put in the effort in and outside of practice. Because of the amount of teamwork that went into the past tennis season, we were able to bring home a state title for our school.

SL:   What do you look for in a great coach?
AMB:   For a great coach, I look for someone who is willing to work with their athletes. Communication is also very important as well as a supportive coach who will be there to support you on the good days and there to lift you up on the bad ones.

SL:   How would your high school coaches and teammates describe you?
AMB:   I hope that my high school teammates would describe me as very welcoming and easy to work with. Being on a team and working with other athletes is very important to me, and I hope my teammates would describe me that way.

Thanks Anna Marie!  We wish you all the best next year as a Panther!

More Than a College Counselor.

St. Luke's: Where should students start when applying for scholarships?
Lydia Edmonds: Start with the schools you are interested in and what scholarships they have. After you apply to a university most will automatically enter you in the contest for scholarships you meet the criteria for. But some universities do expect students to look on their institution's website and apply separately. There are so many independent scholarships and a great way to find them is by looking locally at companies who do scholarship programs. Many companies also do scholarship grants for employees’ children, so make sure to ask your parents.

SL:   What are the different types of scholarships?
LE:   Institutional scholarships and independent scholarships. Institutional scholarships come from the university but independent scholarships are from privateorganizations/nonprofits and usually are not specific to a university. 2 Types of institutional scholarships:
1. Merit scholarships (based on your academic merit)
2. Athletics/Performing Arts/Leadership scholarships (based on personal talent/ contribution given to the school).

SL:   What are some good tips for finding scholarship opportunities?
LE:   Look into these websites:

SL:   How do I tell if a scholarship is legitimate?
LE:   If you are ever asked to pay any fee to join or give away any private information right away (Example: social security number) then it is probably not a legitimate scholarship.

SL:   Do you have any tips when applying for college scholarships?
LE:   Think of how much effort you have to put in for the payout. Nationwide scholarships that require essays and don't award large amounts of money could be a waste of valuable time and effort. Also, scholarship deadlines are often far earlier than admissions deadlines for colleges so make sure you know your deadlines!

SL:   Typically, what is the deadline to apply for scholarships?
LE:   Most scholarship deadlines land between the end of fall to late January.

SL:   How often should students meet with college counselors to make sure they are on the right track?
LE:   At the least once, but feel free to do so as many times as possible.

SL:   Does the amount I receive in scholarships affect my eligibility for financial aid?
LE:   Sometimes it can, depending on your FAFSA. Many universities approach financial aid differently and merit based scholarships are given out without bias of students' financial need.

SL:   Any other information about how to succeed in the college scholarship process?
LE:   Know that it can be overwhelming and it’s better to start early (spring of junior year). To get ahead, visit colleges when you travel and tour as much as possible. Students need to find schools that area good fit for them and then look into scholarships for those schools.

Thanks Mrs. Edmonds!   If you ever have any questions, please feel free to reaach out to Mrs. Edmonds at ledmonds@slesmobile.org.
