W
hat does it mean to be a High School Senior Athlete? At St. Luke’s, playing in a final season, the final home game is personal. On Senior Night, the environment of the gym is ecstatic. Everyone in the stands is there to support Wildcats Basketball. As people enter, they are greeted with decorations, cheering, and energy. The last home game of the season is always packed with the student section crowded with classmates and teachers. The cheerleaders are in the first two rows, cheering loudly for the Wildcats. The teammates, who are supporting each other in their final chance of victory, have been playing by each other’s side throughout the entire journey. Every second of every minute is personal for everyone.

All schools have their traditions to honor their Seniors and everything they have sacrificed for the athletic programs, but St. Luke’s Senior Night is a celebration for everybody. Not only is the family celebrating their Wildcats, but teachers, friends, and coaches who have helped them through their High School years. This night is always nostalgic. That’s the only word that can be used to describe St. Luke’s Senior Night. It is full of memories, reminiscing on past games, favorite practices, least favorite drills, and hilarious memories shared between the teammates. The underclassmen take on the challenge to plan the special night. They take the time to organize everything from the decorations to the flavor of the cake. The locker room will be flooded with red, black, and white balloons, the lockers will be draped in streamers, and the Senior Wildcats will be crowned. Each team has its tradition that they recreate every year. The boy’s basketball team will always listen to the same song, while the the girls sign basketballs for the Seniors.

Being able to lead both boys' and girls' basketball has exposed me to so many life lessons. I am thankful God has placed me on this path that has crossed with so many amazing young adults, and I am sad to have to let them go.
Coach Garreth Trawick

Recently, the basketball program has one of its most emotional Senior Nights yet. The girls' basketball team is losing on of its most cherished players. KK Robinson is one of three Seniors on the Varsity Girl’s Basketball Team. KK has been part of the St. Luke’s program since seventh grade and is pursuing a collegiate athletic career in basketball. She has already received an offer from Bishop State. KK has been the team’s captain for two years and has made a personal connection with each one of the players. Coach Trawick has been the Lady Wildcats basketball coach for six years and has coached KK through each and every game. Coach Trawick said, “Being able to lead both the boys and girls basketball has exposed me to so many life lessons. I am thankful God has placed me on this path that has crossed with so many amazing young adults, and I am sad to have to let them go.”

This season’s Senior Night ended with two huge wins for both basketball teams. These wins were able to place our Wildcats into an intense battle for the Area Tournaments. Senior Night was celebrated with nine of the St. Luke’s Seniors. The combination of the school’s boys' and girls' basketball teams and the varsity cheerleaders create a long list of achievements. The ceremony occurs between the two games. A student favorite, Mr. Box, introduces and praises each Senior’s accomplishments. Every Senior is presented by their parents, who each receive a rose, and they are showcasing the biggest expression of pride. As a St. Luke’s family, we are so incredibly proud to see how these Wildcats have grown and developed since they arrived on this campus, and we cannot wait to see how they continue to impact the lives around them.

Thanksgiving Lessons.

I
t is no secret that each of our coaches here at St. Luke’s has taught all of our student-athletes to be not only better athletes but better people. However, the same could be said for the coaches. Being a coach not only means sacrificing your own time, but learning from the experience. No amount of words could describe just how thankful we are for these amazing coaches and all they have done for St. Luke’s and all its athletes. In honor of recognizing these coaches, I asked each coach, whether a fall or spring sport, what they believed the greatest lesson they have learned as a coach or athlete is, here are the results.

Athletic Director Breaks Boundaries.

D
id you know that only 21.8% of high school athletic directors are women? This statistic is shocking, especially considering over 41% of athletes are women! This statistic certainly doesn’t include St. Luke’s’ Meredith Donald, though. At only 30 years old, Coach Meredith Donald has found great success as head of our volleyball program and as female Athletic director. The average age of an Athletic Director is 46! This certainly can be credited to her endless love and dedication to all things WILDCATS!

Despite being the Female Athletic Director, Coach Donald will always help anyone that asks, not just the ladies! She loves assisting student athletes in achieving their goals. One can often find her running leadership groups or helping athletes formulate emails to colleges. Coach Donald is grateful to have Male Athletic Director, Coach Garreth Trawick to work alongside in guiding athletes to reach their fullest potential.

Coach Donald is thankful for her parents allowing her to participate in any sport that sparked her interest which helped to foster a deep love for sports.

Varsity Girls Volleyball

When she was only 7 years old, she realized that she loved competing and that she wanted to be the best version of herself possible. Her parents instilled in her at an early age that practicing and caring for her body would help her become successful.

Growing up, Coach Donald played volleyball, baseball, basketball, and golf. She has plenty of experience knowing the type of lasting impression that coaches can have on their athletes. She recalls her high school coach taking her team on a retreat every summer. They were not allowed to have cell phones so they spent the entire week learning about their teammates and growing as individuals, playing bonding games and reflecting on who they were and how they could become the best version of themselves. Being an athlete also taught her that she is always representing someone and to be the best version of herself each day. She learned to be coachable and that the people that are the hardest on you believe in you the most.

As a coach of female athletes, she feels she can connect and share her experiences to help motivate. Coach Donald tries to compare every situation to life lessons and give examples of what could happen later in life and how to respond in the right way. She even tries to motivate those that are disengaged from sports by finding that one thing that they really care about and building on it and motivating them to work hard. She advises all young girls who are just starting off in sports to play as many sports as possible because it will help them become better athletes.

For her athletes that are looking to play at the next level, Coach Donald meets with them several times a year to get an idea of their goals and what they are looking for in a college. They go through a small checklist and start filtering out colleges based on the athletes’ desires and needs. She is able to speak from the experience of both a coach and as a recuritable athlete having played volleyball for Spring Hill College

In the future, Coach Donald hopes that each athletic program continues to grow. She hopes our students take advantage of being at a smaller school by getting more involved and contributing to many different teams. Coach Donald’s words of advice for all Wildcats are, “Work as hard as you can - no matter the task, love others, and never make things about yourself - make life about helping others!”
Thank you Coach Donald!

GO WILDCATS!

Celebrating National Coach's Day with Coach Trawick.

It
is National Coach's Day and St. Luke's is celebrating Mobile, Alabama's very own Coach Trawick! In addition to being the head coach for varsity men's and women's basketball, Coach Trawick is also the Athletic Director for men's sports at St. Luke's. As an undergrad, he played basketball for Auburn University where his teammates and coaches encouraged him to become a coach himself. He has always been surrounded by basketball throughout his

National Coach's Day with Coach Trawick

life as his grandmother and mother were also involved with basketball. Coaching reminds him of where he grew up, being born and raised in a small town and small school.

Being able to be a positive influence on his players and watching them grow and mature is one of Coach Trawick’s favorite parts of coaching. He often reminds his players, “It is not a right, but a privilege to represent St. Luke’s.”

Success cannot be measured on paper, according to Coach Trawick. He says, “Athletes should be willing to outwork everyone. If you do that then opportunities will arise academically and athletically.”

Coach Trawick at AHSAA PlayoffsCoaching is a big job and Coach Trawick expects the players to value his time. During the regular season, the girls start practice right after school by reviewing film and are on the floor for 2-hours. At 6:00 p.m. the boys begin their practice.

When he is not coaching, Coach Trawick enjoys being with his wife and two daughters. He loves going to the beach and spending quality time together.

Welcome to St. Luke's basketball. This year, St. Luke's welcomes two new head coaches to the basketball program.

Boys' Head Coach Chris Washington is a Hartford Alabama native who has lived in Mobile mostly his entire life. He attended McGill-Toolen where he played basketball for four years. He attended Faulkner State Junior College. He coached youth and high school basketball at B.C. Rain where the teams he helped coached were successful winning several region championships and were regulars in the Final Four. "My philosophy is playing sound defense, rebounding the ball, and taking advantage of the 3 point line." Coach Washington says he is looking forward to the challenge working with the kids and keeping the tradition of St. Luke's winning ways.
