Meet Coach Lee.

St. Luke's: What do you coach?
Coach Ronn Lee: Football

SL:   Why do you coach?
RL:   I have a passion for athletics. I have always enjoyed watching young athletes improve each day.

SL:   How did you come to be a coach?
RL:   I graduated from college with a double major, Business Administration and English. Upon Graduation, I went to work with ZEP Chemical Company as an outside sales person. I worked from Pensacola to Tallahassee Florida. While traveling, every evening after work, I would go watch a high school football, basketball or baseball practice or game. After two years of doing this, I decided to return to college and get my teacher's certificate. It took one year to complete the process. That was 36-years ago and I have never regretted my decision.

SL:   What is your coaching philosophy?
RL:   Help young athletes learn how to compete, building long lasting relationships with both players and their parents. I was taught by my parents that competition brings out the best in people.

SL:   What is a typical week like for one of your athletes during the season?
RL:   Each Monday we practice in shorts and helmet. We work on the kicking game and introduce the players to their next opponent. Practice usually lasts 90 minutes. Tuesday is one of our hardest days. We are in full pads and practice is 120-minutes. Wednesday is another hard day but not as hard as Tuesday. We are usually full pads, practice is 120 minutes. Thursday is our walk through. We review all parts of our game plan. Practice lasts 45-minutes to 1 hour. Friday is game day.

SL:   What expectations do you have of your players?
RL:   My expectations are based on our one team rule: ALWAYS PROTECT THE TEAM... This rule has many aspects to it, here are some examples:
1) Be at every practice - on time (which is early)
2). Be prepared - (doing your homework)
3). Be the best you can be - (on and off the field)

SL:   What do you consider "successful" in terms of coaching?
RL:   Success means many things to a coach. Society defines success as how many wins you accumulate. For me, I believe success is something each individual has to achieve. Success is measured in effort, because effort shows interest.

SL:   Why do you enjoy coaching athletes at St. Luke's?
RL:   I enjoy coaching at St. Luke’s because, our young men enjoy playing football, but realize football is a means to an end. I love their attitude and the work habits they have developed from being at our School.

SL:   What do you do in your spare time when you are not coaching?
RL:   My spare time is spent outdoors, my hobbies include hunting, fishing, boating and spending time with grandchildren and family.

Meet Coach Russell.

St. Luke's: What do you coach?
Coach Seamus Russell: XC and Track & Field

SL:   Why do you coach?
SR:   I ran Cross Country and Track in high school and collegiately at Spring Hill College. I loved competing in both sports and coaching was the next step for me.

SL:   How did you come to be a coach?
SR:   Coach Donald was also a collegiate athlete at Spring Hill College so when she reached out about the coaching opportunity at St Luke's, the decision seemed like an obvious one.

SL:   What is your coaching philosophy?
SR:   I always try to foster a positive environment for my kids and promote a real sense of family for both XC and track. Both sports can be seen as individualistic, but it takes every team member working hard and encouraging each other to succeed.

SL:   What is a typical week like for one of your athletes during the season?
SR:   It depends on the sport; Track and Field is diversified due to the number of differing events. In XC, runners will typically have two 6 a.m. practices where they will work on speed training and pacing, and three afternoon days where they will work on getting their mileage up for endurance training.

SL:   What expectations do you have of your players?
SR:   I always look to a quote by the runner Steve Prefontaine, "To give anything less than your best, is to sacrifice the gift". Everyone has off days, but even then you should always be giving your absolute best- not just for yourself but for your teammates who are relying on you.

SL:   What do you consider "successful" in terms of coaching?
SR:   For me, signs of success are personal growth and improvement; not just physically but mentally as well. If you lock those in, you'll be well on your way.

SL:   Why do you enjoy coaching athletes at St. Luke's?
SR:   The way that my kids look out for each other, especially the younger classmen, is always great to see. You don't normally see that with other schools or programs. Their work ethic and personal conduct on and off the field shows a real difference.

SL:   What do you do in your spare time when you are not coaching?
SR:   In my spare time, I still really enjoy running and competing in outdoor races like the Spartan Race and Warrior Dash. My current goal though is to become eligible for and compete in the Boston Marathon.

Meet Coach Donald.

St. Luke's: What do you coach?
Coach Meredith Donald: Volleyball

SL:   Why do you coach?
MD:   I coach because I love helping kids become better not just in volleyball but in life. I love the sport and I love teaching lessons through the sport. My coaches were my biggest role models and I wanted to be that to other kids.

SL:   How did you come to be a coach?
MD:   I became a coach my senior year of high school. I was an assistant but fell in love with helping other people learn the game that I loved so much. I realized my senior year of college I could not live without the game and being part of it. I wanted to give back to the sport that gave so much to me. Volleyball taught me about life. It felt great to be part of something that was bigger than myself.

SL:   What is your coaching philosophy?
MD:   I want to develop every player as a whole. My desire is for them to not only be the best player they can be but the best person they can be. I want my players to learn how to work with others and work toward a common goal and make good decisions. Little things matter, being disciplined not only applies on the court but off the court.

SL:   What is a typical week like for one of your athletes during the season?
MD:   A typical week for my athletes during the season demands a lot of their time. We are usually always on campus at 6:00 a.m. On game days we do yoga or some type of stretching. Other days we are running or working out at 6:00 a.m. also. After school if we do not have a game we practice until 5:00. That is everyday except for Friday, we get here around 6:00 a.m. to run for the week. For every ball we do not give effort to, we run a lap around the track.

SL:   What expectations do you have of your players?
MD:   I have very high expectations for my players. My players turn in grade sheets to me every other Friday. They attend study sessions or get a tutor until the grade is up to a C or higher. On game days we wear chapel apparel to the game. We have to look the best to play the best. We always follow school rules. The whole team runs when someone gets in trouble because our actions always affect someone else. They run what is called Cecile's (I will let them tell you about those). We are always 15 minutes early to any commitment. Being on time is very important in life. If you miss practice or workouts you do not play in the game. If you miss practice or a workout you do not play until it is made up. We do not cheat reps... ever... if you do you will be kicked out immediately. Lastly, we always respect each other. We are one big family that loves volleyball.

SL:   What do you consider "successful" in terms of coaching?
MD:   A successful season is not defined by wins and losses. It is defined by developing the player as a whole. When players leave your program are they a better person? My goal is to help them leave prepared for life. I want my players to learn to make good decisions and learn from their mistakes so in life they think about others not just themselves. I want them to learn to work hard at everything they do and to never give up. If they have that mentality in life they will be successful at anything they want to do.

SL:   Why do you enjoy coaching athletes at St. Luke's?
MD:   I enjoy coaching at St. Luke’s because I love kids. My girls make my bad days good and my good days even better.

SL:   What do you do in your spare time when you are not coaching?
MD:   When I am not coaching I love working out and playing golf. Most of all I enjoy time with my family.
