The St. Luke’s Episcopal soccer program is set for a thrilling night of postseason action as both the girls’ and boys’ teams prepare to face Orange Beach High School in back-to-back matches on Friday, May 2, 2025, at Davidson High School in Mobile. The girls will kick off the evening at 5:00 PM, followed by the boys’ game at 7:00 PM.

The girls come into their semifinal matchup with a 14-6 overall record and a perfect 4-0 regional record, showcasing their dominance in 4A play this season. This match marks a critical step as they aim to punch their ticket to Huntsville for the AHSAA Final Four. Junior standout Kiley Hawarah leads the offensive charge with an incredible 42 goals this season, averaging 2.3 goals per game. Sophomore forward Sofia Maghupoy adds depth to the attack with 1.2 goals and 1.1 assists per game. Defensively, senior Cami Abel and junior Ally Grace Lowell anchor the backline with 65 and 52 steals respectively, while goalkeeper Ashlyn Turner boasts a goals-against average of 0.974 and 6.7 saves per game.

A win would not only send the girls to the Final Four—it would also move them one step closer to achieving a historic first: the program’s first-ever state championship.

Immediately following, the defending state champion St. Luke’s boys will take the field at 7:00 PM looking to keep their title hopes alive. Last season, the Wildcats captured the 1-3A state championship. Now competing in the 4A classification, they’re on a mission to go back-to-back and bring home another trophy to Mobile.

Leading the attack for the boys are Mason Brown and Jameson Bryant, who have been key scoring threats all season. On the defensive end, Rishi Gupta helps anchor the backline, while Brantley Weed holds down the goal with consistent and clutch performances under pressure.

A victory over Orange Beach would secure the boys’ spot in the Final Four in Huntsville and put them within striking distance of a second consecutive state title.

With both programs eyeing a trip to the state semifinals—and potentially state championships—Friday night promises to be a monumental moment for St. Luke’s soccer. Fans are strongly encouraged to pack the stands at Davidson High School and cheer on both teams as they chase history.

St. Luke’s soccer is ready for a big season in 4A. It’s that time of year again—soccer season is here, and excitement is in the air at St. Luke’s Episcopal School! After an incredible year for both the boys’ and girls’ teams, expectations are higher than ever as they move up to Class 4A. Last season, the boys brought home the 1-3A state championship, while the girls made school history by reaching the Final Four for the first time. Now, with tougher competition ahead, both teams are ready to prove they belong among the best.

Coming off a state championship victory, the St. Luke’s boys’ soccer team is looking to keep the momentum going. Last season, they dominated their competition in 1-3A, showing strong teamwork, skill, and determination. But with the move to 4A, the challenge gets even tougher. While they may be in a new classification, this team knows what it takes to win. Expect to see a fast-paced, aggressive style of play as they take on bigger schools and tougher opponents. The question is: Can they repeat their success at a higher level? If their work ethic and chemistry are anything like last season, they have a great shot at making another deep playoff run.

The St. Luke’s girls’ soccer team made a statement last year by reaching the Final Four for the first time in school history. It was a breakthrough season that showed just how talented and determined this group is. Now, as they enter 4A, they’ll have to raise their game even more. With new challenges ahead, this team is ready to prove they belong. Returning players who experienced last year’s deep playoff run will be key leaders, helping guide younger teammates as they face stronger competition. The goal? Not just to make the playoffs, but to go even further. With their strong defense, dynamic attack, and never-give-up mentality, the girls are determined to make another historic run.

St. Luke’s soccer is on the rise, and this season is a chance to show that last year’s success was just the beginning. Moving up to 4A brings new challenges, but this program has proven that it’s ready to compete at the highest level. Whether it’s the defending champion boys’ team or the history-making girls’ squad, one thing is for sure—St. Luke’s soccer is ready to make some noise. So, students, parents, and fans, get ready for another exciting season. Come out, support the teams, and be part of what could be another historic year for St. Luke’s soccer!

Meet the Varsity girls soccer Coach, Austin Beatty. Coach Beatty has been playing soccer for over twenty-four years and has been coaching for six. For most of his life, soccer has been his escape. Throughout his life, he says that soccer has taught him the importance of persistence and determination. No matter what life threw how way, he always had soccer. One of the things he loves about the sport, is that once he steps on the field he can leave everything behind. Once the game starts, all these problems he and his players have don’t matter. Coach Beaty says, “For all of my life soccer has been a complete escape, no matter what I had in my life I had soccer.”

Outside of soccer, he is a small business owner. Austin’s Antique Shop is one of his biggest passions and proudest accomplishments. At the shop, he has a cat named Katz, after the show Courage the Cowardly Dog. This cat was found inside a cop car, missing three toes on one of its feet, Coach Beatty took him in as a rescue. Now, Katz has become a permanent member of his family. He also has a dog named Snap, like Snap, Crackle, and Pop.

In his free time, Coach Beatty runs and watches soccer. He hasn’t been able to play soccer since he broke his Tib-Fib in 2019. After he broke his leg, he went through extensive rehab and physical therapy to regain the strength in his leg. This experience opened his eyes to how much the sport means to him. Now, he is grateful he gets to share his love for this sport with so many amazing people. Before every game, Coach Beatty has made it a tradition to give the team a motivating speech, where he reminds them that no matter what they are doing it together.

For all of my life soccer has been a complete escape, no matter what I had in my life I had soccer.
Coach Beatty

Coach Beatty became the Wildcats girls soccer coach last year, which has been a complete change for him. He used to coach boys' soccer, but now the girl's soccer team holds a special place in his heart. This season, he has begun to implement more positive reinforcement. This is the one thing he strongly believes in. He said that the difference between girls' and boys soccer teams is that with the girls, he has developed more of a connection with his players. With boys soccer teams, are more of a machine, while girls' sports can connect on a deeper level through the love of the sport. This team has become more than a team, they are a family. He is constantly pushing his team to their limits and encouraging team bonding.

This season has started strong for our Lady Wildcats and Coach believes that this season has a promising finish. He believes that this team can make it to the finals in area play for the first time in years. The season started off rough, but the team has found a way to connect on the field, unlike any other team he has ever coached. They have redefined the game of soccer to fit each and everyone's different skill levels. He is so excited for the rest of the season and cannot wait to see what these girls bring to the table. Cami Abel, one of the girl's varsity soccer players says, “Coach Beatty is very committed to everything he does. He puts so much effort into us as players, to make sure we do not lose our love for this sport.”

Go Wildcats!

More Than A Soccer Team.

Ricky Hernandez-Sexton #8

Ricky has played soccer since he was 5-years-old. He currently plays forward for the Wildcats. One of his favorite memories from being on the soccer team was beating Westminster in PK’s - sending them to the Final Four. Being an athlete has made Ricky a better student and worker because he has had to learn how to multitask and manage his time more efficiently. Soccer has taught him how to be a leader, how to communicate and how to be someone that people can look up to. Ricky’s favorite advice from Coach Depinet is when he told them to be passionate about doing something they enjoy. Next year, Ricky plans on continuing his soccer and academic career at Pfeiffer University.

Matthew Knotts #11

Matthew has played soccer for 15-years. Currently, he is the center-midfielder for the varsity soccer team. Soccer has taught Matthew that hard work pays off. His favorite memory of playing as a Wildcat is beating Westminster in the playoffs, the pre-season get-togethers and his teammates. Coach Depinet has been very motivational to Matthew because he always pushes his players to do their best. He plans on attending the University of South Alabama next year.

Kevin Ori

Kevin is the goalkeeper for SLES. He has played soccer for 14-years and one of his favorite memories is winning the second round of playoffs during the 2021 season against Westminster. The crowd, the atmosphere and the joy of winning the game was unlike anything he ever experienced while playing soccer. One of his favorite traditions is the midnight practice on the first day they are eligible to start practicing as a team with a ball. Kevin is thankful that Coach Depinet has been consistently tough on the team because it has greatly improved the talent, both as individuals and as a team. He says Coach Depinet holds them to standards that without, wouldn’t have brought the program this far. Being an athlete has made Kevin a better worker -forcing him to push past mental blocks that he may not have normally tried to push through. One of his favorite quotes is “Today matters.” Kevin is still deciding where he will attend school next year.

Meelan Patel #4

Meelan has played soccer since preschool - he loved the sport from the moment the ball touched his foot. He plays center-back and back-up keeper for SLES. One of his favorite memories was the second round playoff game against Westminster. The support from the fans was incredible throughout the whole game, especially after Ricky made the last PK and everybody stormed the field. He appreciates that Coach Depinet pushes him to be better and knows his potential more than he does (after not realizing this until his junior year.) Being an athlete has taught Meelan that hard work is required on and off of the field. Meelan plans to go to the University of Alabama.

Shubh Patel #9

Shubh has played soccer since he was 12-years-old. He currently plays winger. He has loved being a part of the soccer team because of the dedication it requires and for all the life lessons it has taught him. Some of his favorite memories include scoring his first goal and “Freshman Got Talent.” He appreciates Coach Depinet because he has been his coach since middle school and has always wanted the best for his players. Ricky Hernandez-Sexton has been inspirational to Shubh because of his dedication on and off the field. One of his favorite motivational quotes is “Pain is weakness leaving the body.” He plans to go to the University of South Alabama or Auburn next year.

Thomas Watts #50

Thomas has played soccer for 4-5 years. He is currently left-back for St. Luke’s. He enjoys being on the team because everyone treats each other with respect, he learns something new everyday and the coaches are amazing. He will never forget playing in his first varsity game. One of his favorite traditions is when Alex Ferguson says “Just Do It” at the start of each practice. Thomas admires Coach Beatty because he is funny and also a great coach when it comes to listening to every player. Being an athlete has taught him to stay consistent and to never give up. One of his favorite motivational quotes by Coach Depinet, “Don’t apologize for doing something wrong, saying sorry doesn’t change anything. If you want to fix a mistake, show it on the field.” Thomas plans to attend The University of Southern Mississippi next year.
