Magical Mardi Gras.

E
ach year, St. Luke's Japonica Campus hosts a one-of-a-kind Mardi Gras parade for K2-K5 students, right after the Grandparents Day program. It’s a tradition that brings together students, families, and the entire school community for a colorful and exciting celebration. This year’s parade, following the “School House Rock” themed Grandparents Day, was no exception. The students’ enthusiasm, creativity, and school spirit shone brightly as they marched through the campus, making lasting memories along the way.

A Parade of Fun and Creativity

The Mardi Gras parade is a unique experience where each grade level brings its own flair and creativity to the event.

K2 Students kicked off the festivities dressed in Mardi Gras-themed T-shirts and proudly carried shakers they made in class. These little ones were full of energy, their handmade instruments adding to the parade’s lively vibe.

K3 and K4 Students added a splash of color with homemade Mardi Gras decorations. They wore festive outfits with feathers, beads, and glitter, playing various instruments and waving noise makers to keep the energy high. Their excitement and creativity were infectious, helping set the tone for the rest of the parade.

K5 Students took the parade to the next level by creating their own Mardi Gras floats, each one based on a personal theme, from dinosaurs and football to Barbie and stuffed animals. The creativity behind each shoebox-sized float was impressive! To top it off, the varsity cheerleaders escorted the K5 students and their floats, showcasing both their school spirit and the hard work the students put into their creations.

A Community Celebration

One of the best parts of the Mardi Gras parade is how it brings everyone together. Parents, grandparents, and siblings join in the fun, marching alongside the students or cheering them on from the sidelines. It’s a chance to celebrate not only Mardi Gras but also the sense of community that makes our school so special. The support from families and the collective pride in the students’ efforts make the event even more memorable.

Why You Shouldn’t Miss It Next Year

If you’ve never experienced St. Luke's Mardi Gras parade, you’re missing out! It’s an event full of joy, creativity, and school spirit. Whether you’re participating in the parade or watching from the crowd, there’s something magical about seeing the students’ hard work come to life in such a colorful and lively way. The mix of music, homemade creations, and family participation makes it an event that’s not just for the students, but for the whole school community.

Next year, we invite you to join us for another unforgettable Mardi Gras celebration. Mark your calendars, gather your family, and get ready for an event that’s sure to be bigger, better, and more festive than ever before. It’s a tradition we look forward to every year, and we can’t wait to share the excitement with you!

2025 Grade Level Challenge.

This week Wilkes the Wildcat made a surprise visit to our students at the University and Japonica Campuses. He was there to take pictures for the Grade Level Challenge. The 2025 theme is Paws Together.

This annual event was created to be a fun way for the entire St. Luke's community to participate in giving to our school. Every grade at St. Luke’s will compete against each other in raising funds. The contribution size does not matter at all. The grade that raises the most money will have a special surprise and the teacher of the class will receive a gift card.

As if participating in such a great cause wasn’t incentive enough, there are also fun rewards for getting involved! The class with the highest participation rate will be recognized with a special prize. But perhaps the most important reward of all is the satisfaction of knowing that, by working together, we can achieve something great for the community.

If you cannot give, just post on social media and spread the word. By doing this you can get friends and family involved and can receive participation that way. The parents have helped the most with a total of ninety five percent of the donors being parents. The "Paws Together" Class Challenge reminds us that even the smallest actions, when combined, create a powerful impact. It’s about more than just donations—it's about fostering a spirit of collaboration, supporting our children, and encouraging kindness and generosity. Each effort, whether it's donating, spreading the word, or rallying your child’s class to get involved, makes a difference. We can only succeed by putting our paws together.

So thank you to all the parents, grandparents, and others who have donated. Let's put our paws together for a successful 2025 challenge! Whether you’re participating as a family or supporting your child’s class, you’re helping to build something amazing. Together, we can create positive change and make a lasting impact.

Insight on STEM+M at St. Luke's.

A
s St. Luke's continues to support its mission to prepare students for college and life, it is important to provide continuing education to parents, students, and the community on the ways that the school is accomplishing its goals. Each quarter, we will release an informative article on this progress. Issue 2 discusses the importance of STEM+M education at St. Luke's

What is the importance of STEM+M in education?

St. Luke’s Episcopal School takes seriously the responsibility to prepare our students for success in a workforce that, according to recent publications (the World Economic Forum'sFuture of Jobs and Dell Technologies Institute for the Future) it is estimated that 85% of the jobs that will exist in 2030 have not been invented yet.

At St. Luke’s Episcopal School, our vision is clear: To change the way students experience the world through STEM+M. In a region increasingly driven by healthcare and engineering, we are proud to be the first school in our area to fully integrate STEM+M (Science, Technology, Engineering, Math, and Medical) into every aspect of our K2-12th curriculum, activities, sports, and student life.

This comprehensive approach ensures that our students are prepared for college and equipped with the skills and mindset to thrive in a rapidly evolving world. Embedding STEM+M into their daily experiences fosters critical thinking, creativity, and a deep understanding of the fields shaping their future.

Together, we are shaping leaders who will navigate and innovate in a world where science and technology are the keys to opportunity and success.

How will our STEM+M focus benefit our students?

St. Luke’s Episcopal School offers distinctive programs that set our STEM+M education apart, notably our Biomedical Sciences Program and Project Lead The Way (PLTW) classes.

The job market outlook for students with a STEM+M foundation is highly promising, with STEM+M fields expected to grow by 10.4% from 2023 to 2033, far outpacing other sectors. Healthcare alone will add 1.6 million jobs, and engineering roles are set to rise by 13%. STEM+M education prepares students for high-demand, well-paying careers in these fields and equips those pursuing humanities or social science degrees with critical thinking, problem-solving, and adaptability skills. These competencies enhance creativity, critical analysis, and effective communication, equipping STEM+M and liberal arts majors with a competitive edge in a job market increasingly intertwined with technological advancements. At St. Luke’s Episcopal School, our comprehensive STEM+M approach ensures ALL students are ready to thrive in an evolving world.

What distinguishes St. Luke’s from other schools in terms of STEM+M education?

St. Luke’s Episcopal School offers distinctive programs that set us apart from our competitors. In addition to our strong offerings in language arts, community and historical instruction, foreign language, music, and performing arts, our commitment to providing a stellar STEM+M curriculum begins in PK2 and continues through 12th grade.

Our youngest students are introduced to STEM+M concepts in those classrooms through interactive play, stories, games, and table activities. Basic science, engineering, and math skills are presented in shapes, colors, patterns, blocks, stacking, magnetic tiles, and puzzles. Technology is used minimally in the classroom at this age. The medical component includes introducing personal hygiene through handwashing, covering coughs/sneezes, and the importance of good nutrition.

Our elementary and intermediate grades engage in a comprehensive STEM+M curriculum that includes coding, physics, computer programming, aeronautics, computer systems, and the properties of matter. Through hands-on activities and design challenges, such as coding robotic devices, designing games, and creating reaction-time programs, students develop critical thinking, problem-solving skills, and a strong foundation in STEM+M concepts, preparing them for future academic and real-world success.

Middle school students delve into aerospace engineering, mobile app development, design and modeling, and take on the role of medical detectives. They tackle real-world challenges by designing flight models, creating apps to address societal issues, developing therapeutic toys for children with cerebral palsy, and tracing food-borne illnesses through a mock scenario, all of which foster problem-solving, creativity, and a deeper understanding of STEM+M's impact on the world.

Our high school curriculum offers a vibrant blend of traditional math and science courses, honors and AP options, and cutting-edge STEM+M classes to prepare students for diverse career paths. In addition to advanced subjects like calculus, biology, chemistry, and physics, students can delve into specialized areas such as Innovations in Biomedical Sciences, where they design and build medical devices like laparoscopic simulators, and Introduction to Engineering, where hands-on projects are designed to explore chemical, civil, electrical, and mechanical engineering. Other distinctive offerings include Culinary Medicine and Sports Medicine classes. Students engage in hands-on projects such as developing mobile apps, creating adaptive and assistive devices, and mastering biomedical skills like CPR, clinical assessments, and medical equipment use. Through Interventions in Biomedical Sciences, students conduct in-depth research and collaborate with mentors, culminating in a capstone presentation to a professional audience.

This comprehensive approach empowers students to apply their knowledge in meaningful ways, whether pursuing careers in healthcare, engineering, or other STEM+M fields. It is also beneficial for any profession that requires organizational skills and problem-solving, teamwork and collaboration, or the use of technology. In other words, this benefits ALL of our students for whatever journey they take after graduation from St. Luke’s Episcopal School.

2024 Fall Fest.

BOO!
Did I scare you? I know that I probably didn't, but I do know that the 5th graders did! As the leaves turned and the days grew shorter, excitement grew at St. Luke's Japonica Campus, where the annual Fall Festival was held in a season of celebration. Among the many activities that bring the St. Luke’s community together, one tradition is the haunted house hosted by the 5th graders every year. This remarkable festivity not only provides thrills and chills for attendees but also fosters a sense of teamwork and creativity in the young participants. The haunted house crafted by the 5th graders has evolved into an immersive experience, involving much planning, creativity, and hard work.

The students began their plan early in the month with students brainstorming themes for their haunted house. Some popular themes have included classic horror stories and ghostly schools. Eventually, they came to terms with mummies and an Egyptian-themed atmosphere for their haunted setting. While each initial theme was different, the common goal is to create an engaging experience that encapsulates the spirit of Halloween! From cobwebs to skeletons, each element helps to transport guests into a different world. Spooky sounds added an auditory layer to the experience, heightening the sense of suspense, and dim lighting and flickering effects created mysterious shadows and unexpected jumpscares!

When the festival date finally approached, the excitement among the students reached a peak, and they participated in final preparations. To get ready for the haunted house, students practiced their roles and got acquainted with their props. The Fall Festival’s haunted house at St. Luke’s is more than just a spooky attraction. It celebrates creativity, hard work, and community spirit. Each year, the event draws in visitors who leave with not just a scare but with a sense of joy and connection.

This tradition educates the students in teamwork and creativity and strengthens the community's bonds. As they continue to refine this beloved tradition, one can only imagine the exciting, scare-filled experiences that await at future festivals. It's a perfect blend of fright and delight that serves as a hallmark of the season. Highlight remains the haunted house, and it's an attraction that has developed its lore over the years.

It's Pajama Day!.

B
y far, one of the coolest things that happens during St. Luke's Episcopal School homecoming week is Pajama Day. Of course, kids at school couldn't wait to get out of their normal school uniforms and into their comfiest, coziest PJs. So, this was going to be a special day, right? The always so buttoned-up and formal school hallways completely devolved into a pajama party. You have students walking around in flannel pants, huge t-shirts, and even a onesie or two. Gone was the usual serious vibe, replaced by this relaxed, fun energy, more so since teachers got in on it, too, trading in their slacks and button-downs for comfy robes and fuzzy slippers.

My favorite part of homecoming week is pajama day, because pajamas are comfortable for school. And I like homecoming because I get to go to the pep-rally at the upper campus.
Lauren McGinnis

On the University Campus, you get to see students hanging in small groups during breaks and at lunchtime to show off the designs on their pajama bottoms or even someone taking advantage of their comfort and dozing off! It was, for sure, a day of relaxation, and frankly, some let their hair down just to enjoy some simple joys of being a kid, or at least to pretend to be one for the day.

My favorite part of about pajama day is that we get to wear pajamas to school!
Charley Hernandez

Of course, the little ones on the lower campus got in some of the fun and silliness of Homecoming Week too. Seeing the hallways and classrooms full of those little feet in fuzzy slippers, vibrantly patterned pants, and character onesies instantly just makes one feel so warm, happy, and all nostalgic. These children get all pumped up so much like little bunny rabbits skipping and then laughing their way to their desks, super stoked at that rare chance when comfort and chilling take priority over regular school clothes. This is a fabulous time for most of them to show off their favorite jammies with cartoon characters or bring along to school their favorite stuffed animal that has special memories attached.

The best part of pajama day is wearing my flower pajamas.
Katherine Burge

Pajama Day is not only a load of fun, but it's really cool for kids to feel that connection through something as simple as showing off their interests through their PJs. That's like a little break from the normal, letting them dive into learning with even more enthusiasm and happiness while chilling in the comfort vibes of "home." For many students, the best day of homecoming week was pajama day, which gave them a break from all the stressors at school and allowed them to chill with their classmates in a relaxed, comfy vibe.

I can wear pajamas!!
