Wildcat Football's Coach Gilmore.

W
hen legendary coaches retire, schools face a big challenge - just ask anyone in Tuscaloosa. Like the Tide, St. Luke's legendary football coach retired after the 2023 season. To the delight of all Wildcat fans, his replacement is well known and well equipped to lead Wildcat football into even greater heights of success.

Born and raised in Mobile, Joe Gilmore was asked to be the Wildcat’s new head coach. Coach Gilmore grew up around the sport of football and has been playing since the age of six. He graduated from St. Paul’s Episcopal School in 2009. While at St. Paul’s, he played varsity football and helped lead the team to their first-ever state title.

Coach Gilmore earned his undergraduate degree at the University of Alabama and his Masters at the University of South Alabama. While at the University of South Alabama, he was a graduate assistant with the South Alabama Jaguars football team. From 2016 to 2018, Coach Gilmore worked as the St. Luke's varsity offensive line coach under Coach Lee. Prior to returning to St. Luke’s as a head coach, Coach Gilmore was the offensive coordinator at Northlake Christian School based out of Covington, Louisiana. While at Northlake, he was also the dean of middle school and assistant athletic director.

During his interview, Coach Gilmore said, “The reason I got into teaching and coaching is to help the youth.” Coach Gilmore didn’t return to St. Luke’s to only help the football team, but also to work with the other athletes and students on campus. He is active on St. Luke’s campus and enjoys getting to get to know all the students and faculty. One aspect of a good coach and leader is the ability to connect with people and take interest in their lives. Due to this approach, Coach Gilmore has already begun to spread a positive attitude throughout our campus.

Coach Gilmore said he is looking forward to this upcoming season, and that he looks forward to seeing the boys’ hard work from the summer pay off. This summer he enjoyed getting to know all of his players and connecting on a deep level with them. Coaching changes come with a lot of complexities like different playing styles, learning new plays, and learning how to communicate with new relationships. During the interview, Coach Gilmore shut down these concerns and said that he believes the players have handled the coaching change phenomenally.

Hard work is a clear value for Coach Gilmore and stands out as a core value for what he is all about. It is easy to see that he believes that hard work is what makes an individual. Without the hard work of every player, Coach Gilmore’s goals for the team cannot be achieved. Another phrase the Wildcat’s football team stands by is, “11 hearts, 1 heartbeat.” Coach Gilmore loves this slogan because it sets a good example for his ideal team. This line shows the true meaning of family and what St. Luke’s represents.

Football player and varsity team co-captain, Turner Tillman, said this about Coach Gilmore, “I love Coach Gilmore. He’s very energetic and I feel like that’s what the team needs.” Christopher Crawley, co-captain alongside Turner Tillman, used the words “leader” and “outgoing” when asked to describe Coach Gilmore. Both Tillman and Crawley said they look up to Coach Gilmore when it comes to their leadership roles as captains. They said he regularly says that he will never ask them to do anything he has not done before. When asked about Coach Gilmore’s coaching style, Chris said, “ He adapts well to the players and keeps stuff simple. He builds upon what Coach Lee already had.” From their words, it is easy so see that the boys enjoy Coach Gilmore, and that is ultimately what builds the team.

Clearly, St. Luke’s Wildcat football team is in good hands. Many of us were surprised when Coach Lee moved to retirement, and some of us may have even worried about how such big shoes would be filled. Although the concerns may have been real, the future looks bright, and the Wildcats are looking strong with Coach Joe Gilmore.

A
s the 2024 NFL draft draws near, it is both a privilege and source of pride to have witnessed the journey of a talent like Jermaine Brown Jr. Under the Friday night lights at St. Luke's, Jermaine honed his skill and pursued his passion relentlessly. Of course, Jermaine was so much more than a student athlete at St. Luke's. Known for his huge smile and proclivity to randomly break out into song, Jermaine's joy was infectuous. He was named "Most Likely to Win an Olympic Medal" in his senior yearbook, a label that reflects his steel will and determination to accomplish any goal. The combination of his work ethic, solid character, and raw talent paved the way for his standout success at the University of Alabama at Birmingham.

Jermaine certainly solidified his legacy at UAB. His electrifying speed, agility, and versatility made him a vital asset to the Blazers' offense. The numbers don't lie. Jermaine's impressive array of statistics underscored his impact on the field with over 3,000 rushing yards, 30 rushing touchdowns, and 700+ receiving yards to his name. His ability to break tackles, find running lanes, and contribute in the passing game make him a versatile weapon for any NFL team.

As the eyes of America focus on Detroit this weekend for the 2024 NFL draft, our Wildcat hearts are bursting with pride for one of our own. Congratulations #1, we look forward to cheering you on for years to come!

St. Luke's Senior Football Tackles Season

Class of 2023 Football Seniors.

Kamerion Chambers #55

Kam Chambers has played football since he was 4-years-old. He was destined to play football because he grew up in a football loving household. He described his youth as “play football or move out.” Kam is thankful to those who pushed him to play football, because he instantly fell in love with the sport. Being an athlete has made Kam a better student by teaching him time management.

Kam enjoys the football team for many reasons. The team traditions of senior dinners on Wednesday/Thursday and the lineman dinners rank high on his list of “whys.” Coach Lee and the rest of the coaching staff have taught him so much about life and the game itself. He truly loves the competitiveness of his teammates and all of the talking smack at practice. He says the friendly smack talking has brought his teammates closer.

During the Spring, Coach Lee prepared Kam for his senior season by putting him in multiple positions on the field, so that he will be familiar with any position he is needed at during the game.

Kam credits Coach Lee with teaching him a lot about being a man and how to be a caring person. He appreciates that Coach Lee cares about his players more than winning. When football season comes to an end, Kam will miss the student section the most. He loves how St. Luke’s is a small school, but the student section roars with pride and excitement. He is thankful for the support on the field.

Jackson Boone #13

Jackson has been playing football since 1st grade and fell in love with the sport immediately. He hasn’t stopped since! Being an athlete has helped make Jackson a better student because he works better having less free time on his hands.

Jackson’s favorite team traditions include downtime and singing “Goodbye” on the way home from a win. He loves that the football team is a place where you can create friendships and bonds with people that you never thought possible. The hot and long practices are made fun because the players will create their own competitions among themselves.

Coach Lee has prepared Jackson for his senior season because he has always pushed him and his teammates for many years, and has always made him want to try his hardest no matter the situation. When football season comes to an end, Jackson will miss the feeling of making a big play and looking up into the stands to see the crowd roaring.

Keyuntae Caver #50

Keyuntae has been playing football for 2 years. He decided to play football because of the competitive nature and the fun atmosphere. His favorite traditions include downtime before games and the lineman dinners. Keyuntae likes being part of the team because of the brotherhood and how his teammates always make him feel comfortable. Being an athlete has made him a better student because of the availability of study sessions offered by his teachers.

His teammates always know how to make practice fun by dancing around, doing flips, and playing music. Coach Lee has prepared Keyuntae for his senior season by teaching him the importance of hard work and dedication. He says that Coach Lee has made an impact on him by teaching him to never give up no matter the circumstances. He will miss the team’s vibes after a win in the cage as well as bus rides back and forth.

Jake Neutze #6

Jake has been playing football since he was 6-years-old. He loves being a Wildcat because he feels the team is more of a family than a team. His favorite team tradition is downtime on a play.

Being an athlete has made Jake a better person because sports teach you how to be disciplined, patient, and respectful. Although practicing everyday is not much fun, the team knows they have to go out each day to get better and better. Coach Lee has prepared Jake for his senior season through the many years leading up to this one. Jake will miss EVERYTHING about football at St. Luke’s!

Benjamin Cumpton #76

Benjamin has been playing football for 9 years. His mom encouraged him to play football when he was younger, and he has stuck with it ever since. He has loved his time as a Wildcat because St. Luke’s football team is like a family and the tradition of going to Waffle House after the games is the best!

Being an athlete has made Benjamin a better person overall because it has helped him with his leadership skills. Coach Lee has taught him about leadership, which has definitely helped this season. Benjamin will miss most everything about football, especially the family environment.

Bailey Cumpton #63

Bailey has been playing football for a total of 9 years. He was always told that he would be a good fit for the team because of his size so he gave it a try. Bailey has loved his time as a Wildcat because of the brotherhood.

Being an athlete has made Bailey a better person because it has forced him to appreciate the many differences of his teammates. Coach Lee has prepared him for his senior season because he forced Bailey to work hard during workouts and taught him many lessons about leadership and how to deal with the obstacles that life throws our way. Bailey will miss St. Luke’s football and he will always remember every teammate he has ever had.

Even though it is his first year on the football team, he says that football has pushed him to be a better athlete and person. After all, everyone was once a beginner!

To get game ready, Robert listens to his “hype music” playlist pre-game in order to get excited to conquer the field. He dances and sings with his teammates as a way to come together and prepare for the game ahead!

Robert, we are so glad you joined the team this year and hope this is your best year yet! Don’t forget the task ahead of you is never as great as the strength within you! Go get ‘em, Wildcat!

DJ Penn

DJ Penn only recently started playing football for his last year of high school, however, he can tell the difference it has made in his work ethic and time management skills. Since he has only recently started playing DJ says he really has to push himself to his personal best. Coach Lee is someone DJ looks up to the most when it comes to football and he mentions how Coach always pushes the team to try their hardest and perform at their best.

DJ’s favorite part about being on the team is the laughs they all share during practice as well as the traditional senior dinners they do. Before a big game DJ’s go to meal is steak and his favorite hype up song is “Runnin” by 21 Savage. When asked what his favorite part is about competing, DJ says he enjoys learning from someone who is better than him and stepping up to a challenge.

Next fall DJ Penn plans on attending Auburn University to further his education. DJ hopes to carry all the lessons he has learned from the football program into college as well as for the rest of his life!

He has loved playing with the Wildcats because of the family-like atmosphere and enjoys the support, motivation, and loyalty of the team. Football Seniors.

Andrew Smith

Varsity football player and senior, Andrew Smith, is a long-timer at St. Luke’s! He has attended St. Luke’s since kindergarten and has enjoyed playing football as a Wildcat for 12 years. That’s dedication!

What Andrew appreciates the most about being part of our varsity football team, is the feeling that they are all one-big family and also knowing that they will always have each other’s backs. It’s all about the TEAM – nothing else matters!

Andrew enjoys that the varsity football team is very competitive against each other, pushing each player to become better athletes. Coach Lee teaches them that success is always earned, it’s never given. Our Wildcats are committed to playing hard, playing smart and playing together and Andrew is eager to see where their senior football season takes them. Success is not an accident, it’s hard work!

Andrew knows that there are two teams, one night and they only have one shot at having zero regrets so preparation is key to any type of success. Poor preparation leads to poor performance so Andrew makes sure to put in the required work. The harder you work, the harder it is to surrender. Andrew’s favorite pregame ritual is hanging out with his teammates. To get into the right frame of mind he also enjoys listening to “Lucid Dreams” by Juice WRLD. Andrew, we’re cheering loud and proud for you during your senior season! Do it NOW and do it RIGHT! Success starts with believing in yourself. Good luck, #59! Finish strong!

Tyler Bracknell

Senior, Tyler Bracknell is also a long-timer at St. Luke’s. He started SLES in pre-school and has played football for 2 years. He is so thankful that another senior, Jake Keesee, forced him to play football because he has made some of the best memories that he could have ever imagined!

Some of Tyler’s favorite football traditions are lineman dinners, junior/senior dinner, running through the banner, and pep rallies. Preparing for the game takes a lot of work and dedication and Tyler feels like his team is ready for the season. Coach Lee, Tyler’s favorite football coach, has prepared them to be successful on and off of the field. He enjoys when Coach Lee puts the competitiveness into practice because it helps the team work harder and bonds tighter. After all, we are ONE school, ONE team, and ONE heart!

Not only does Tyler dominate on the field, he also dominates in the classroom and has earned the “Scholar Athlete of the Year” award. Keep up the great work on and off the field! Always remember…. play hard, smart, and together! You can do this, #5!

Parker Jackson

Senior, Parker Jackson has attended St. Luke’s since 5th grade has been on the varsity football team all throughout his high school years. Parker loves the competitiveness of the sport, but more so, he appreciates the bond that he has with his teammates.

The football team has always said “11 hearts, one heartbeat” and that means a lot to Parker. Only 11 boys are allowed on the football field when the ball is snapped and Parker feels blessed to be out on the field enjoying doing something that he loves with people that he loves.

Parker also enjoys the downtime with the team before football games. He says “It helps me relax and take my mind off of everything that is going on in my life. Playing football has always been my therapy and I could not be more blessed to play this sport.”

Parker, believe in yourself, push your limits, and do whatever it takes to conquer your goals this season. We will be under those Friday night lights cheering you on during your senior football season! We’re proud of you!
