POSITION SUMMARY

The Maintenance Specialist will perform a variety of facility, infrastructure, and utility system maintenance, repair, and renovation tasks at the semi-skilled (and sometimes skilled) level. This position reports to the Director of Facilities and works closely with faculty, staff, and vendors.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Perform preventative and deferred maintenance on HVAC, plumbing, and electrical systems as well as facilities and equipment.
  • Inspect and test systems, machinery, and equipment. Repair and maintain as necessary.
  • Identify supplies, equipment, machinery, etc. required to perform the job.
  • Operate a variety of shop machinery and equipment such as complex hand/power tools.
  • Must be able to work alone.
  • Good working knowledge of electrical systems and the capability of successfully performing tasks associated with the other traditional building trades.
  • Perform other duties such as assisting in preparations for special events, assisting in traffic and parking control, and driving school-owned or rented vehicles to pick-up or deliver items from vendors and between campuses or to transport children from one campus to the other.
  • Periodically perform maintenance on-call duty and respond to after-hours problems.
  • Periodically open and close the facilities for renters.
  • Perform other duties as assigned by the Director of Facilities or Division Directors.



QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS

  • A high school diploma or GED is required, and a one-year certificate from college or technical school is preferred.
  • Three years of experience in plant operations or general building trades with experience and skills in two or more of the following trades and crafts: electrical, plumbing, carpentry, painting, masonry, and HVAC.
  • Ability to perform routine tasks without close supervision.
  • Must possess good communication and customer-service skills.
  • Must be knowledgeable of and follow safety rules, regulations, and policies.
  • Must be able to understand and carry out oral and written instructions.
  • Ability to operate a variety of tools and power equipment.
  • Ability to work independently and/or with teams.
  • Knowledge of standard practices, materials, tools, and terminology of building trades.
  • Ability to walk, stand, maintain balance, climb ladders, crouch, lift up to 50 pounds, bend, stoop, and reach above shoulder level.
  • Ability to withstand inside and outside environmental conditions.
  • Ability to deal with moderate levels of stress related to time constraints and hazards of the job.
  • General outdoor services and maintenance, such as mowing lawn, sweeping areas, etc.
  • A current Alabama driver license must be maintained.



MENTAL/PHYSICAL/ENVIRONMENTAL DEMANDS

  • May be exposed to outdoor weather conditions during portions of the work day.
  • Maintain emotional control under stress.
  • Activities include walking, standing, stooping, bending, kneeling, lifting, pulling, finger dexterity, grasping, pushing, repetitive motions, talking, hearing, and visual acuity.
  • Occasional prolonged and irregular hours.
  • Ability to walk, stand, maintain balance, climb ladders, crouch, lift up to 50 pounds, bend, stoop, and reach above shoulder level.
  • Ability to withstand inside and outside environmental conditions.
  • Ability to deal with moderate levels of stress related to time constraints and hazards of the job.
  • May be exposed to inclement weather.
  • Exposure to a variety of cleaning chemicals.


SCHEDULE

Works various/flexible hours as needed including evening and weekend hours. Must be willing to be on-call 24 hours a day.
